How GCC driving theory tests work

Across the Gulf, every driving licence begins with a theory (knowledge) test before you can sit the practical road test. All six GCC countries drive on the right-hand side of the road and use road signs based on the Vienna Convention, the same international sign system used across Europe and much of the world. That means the warning triangles, red-ringed prohibitions and blue mandatory signs you learn for one country carry over almost unchanged to the next, so the road-signs practice here builds a solid base wherever you test in the region.

What differs is the format. Each country sets its own pass mark, question count, time limit and languages through its own licensing authority, from the RTA, ITC and SRTA in the United Arab Emirates to the General Department of Traffic in Saudi Arabia and the Royal Oman Police in Oman. Across the tests we cover, the theory exam runs from 20 to 40 multiple-choice questions and you generally need around 75% correct to pass. Because the exact numbers change by country, and sometimes by emirate or region and vehicle class, always confirm the current requirements with your local traffic authority or approved driving school before you book.

Wathim covers all six GCC countries with free, per-emirate mock exams and topic tests. Every question is written from the public traffic rules and the standard GCC road signs, and each comes with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation, so you learn the reasoning rather than memorising answers. There is no signup and no limit: retake any mock exam or practice test as many times as you like until you clear the pass mark comfortably.

About GCC driving theory tests

Every Gulf country runs its own theory (knowledge) test before you can sit the practical driving exam, and the format differs: the number of questions ranges from 20 to 40 and you generally need around 75% correct to pass. Whichever country you are licensing in, the fastest way to prepare is to learn the road signs first, then practise full mock exams against the clock until you clear the pass mark comfortably.

The road signs, right-of-way rules and roundabout priorities are broadly shared across the GCC, so the practice here builds a solid base wherever you test. Pick your country to get mock exams and topic tests matched to the local authority, with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation for every question.

Beyond the theory test

Once you have passed the theory test, these help you get a real GCC licence, or convert the one you already hold.

Frequently asked questions

You can practise for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Each country has its own branded mock exams and topic tests that match the local licensing authority, question count and pass mark.

It depends on the country. Across the tests we cover, the theory (knowledge) exam ranges from 20 to 40 multiple-choice questions, and you normally need about 75% correct to pass. Choose your country above to see its exact question count and pass mark.

English and Arabic are available across the GCC, and some countries add more options (for example English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi and Malayalam appear across the tests we cover). Confirm the exact languages with your local traffic authority or approved driving school.

Fees vary by country and are set by the licensing authority and approved driving schools, so we do not quote a fixed price. In most GCC countries you register through an approved driving school or the traffic department, sit the theory (knowledge) test at an approved centre, then move on to the practical test. Always confirm the current fee and booking steps with the authority in your country.

Yes. Every mock exam and topic test on Wathim is completely free, needs no account or signup, and you can retake it as many times as you like until you feel confident.

The theory tests focus on road signs and signals, right of way, roundabouts, lane discipline, speed limits, parking, fines and penalties, and safe, defensive driving. Our questions are written from the public traffic rules and the standard GCC road signs, each with a plain-English explanation.
