About Wathim

6 questions

What is Wathim?

Wathim is an independent information website for expats living in or moving to the GCC. We publish plain-English guides to government services in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait, including visas, ID, driving licences, attestation, and fines.

Is Wathim an official government service?

No. Wathim is an independent information service and is not affiliated with any government entity. We are not a ministry, regulator, or licensed agent. We document portals such as ICP, GDRFA, MOHRE, Absher, Muqeem, Qiwa, Metrash, LMRA, ROP Oman, and MOI Kuwait, but we do not act on their behalf.

How current are the fees and steps in your guides?

We list the published government fee on the date the guide was last reviewed and revisit popular pages whenever a portal changes. Real charges can include VAT, typing centre fees, courier costs, attestation, and bank charges, so always confirm the final amount on the official portal or counter before you pay.

Does Wathim file applications for me?

No. We do not file applications, collect fees, or act as your agent. Wathim is purely an information website. For your actual filing you can use the official portal yourself, a registered typing centre, or a licensed agent in your country.

Is reading the guides free?

Yes. Every guide, country page, FAQ, and fee table on wathim.com is free to read. We do not run paid packages or subscription gates.

Where is Wathim based?

Wathim is based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Our GCC services desk reads messages from anywhere in the world and our guides are written for an international expat audience.

UAE Services

4 questions

What is the difference between ICP, GDRFA, and MOHRE?

ICP is the federal identity, citizenship, customs, and port security authority covering most emirates. GDRFA handles residency and entry for Dubai. MOHRE is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, which handles labour cards and work permits. Our country page for the UAE walks through which portal you need for which service.

How do I renew my Emirates ID?

Most renewals are done through the ICP smart services portal or app. You confirm your details, pay the renewal fee, complete the biometric step if asked, and collect or receive your new card. Fees vary by validity period. Our UAE guides cover the current published amounts and the typing centre fallback.

Can I get a UAE driving licence on my home country licence?

Some nationalities can transfer directly without a test, others need a theory and road test. The list is updated by the relevant authority and changes from time to time. Check our UAE driving licence guide for the current transfer eligibility before booking anything.

How do I check or pay a UAE fine?

Traffic fines are checked and paid through the local police app or website for the emirate where the fine was issued. Overstay fines are handled through ICP or GDRFA depending on your visa type. Our fines guide explains the per emirate routes and links.

Saudi Arabia Services

3 questions

What is Absher and what is Muqeem?

Absher is the citizen and resident portal for personal government services such as iqama, traffic, and family. Muqeem is the employer-facing portal that companies use to manage iqamas and exit re-entry for their staff. Many expat tasks need both, depending on whether they are individual or sponsor driven.

How do I renew my iqama?

Iqama renewals are sponsor-driven through Muqeem and Absher. The sponsor pays the iqama fee and the medical insurance contribution, then renews on the portal. As the employee, you can confirm the new validity in your own Absher account. Our Saudi Arabia guide walks through the timeline and what to do if your sponsor is slow.

How does the Saudi exit re-entry visa work?

Exit re-entry is issued through Absher or Muqeem, depending on who initiates it. You need an active iqama, a clean record, and the fee paid before travel. Single and multiple exit re-entry options are available with different validity windows. The current fees are listed on our Saudi Arabia page.

What is Metrash and how is it used in Qatar?

Metrash is the Ministry of Interior smart service for Qatar. Residents use it to renew QIDs, check fines, manage family sponsorship, request exit permits if applicable, and many other day-to-day government tasks. The Qatar page covers what each Metrash service costs.

What does LMRA do in Bahrain?

LMRA is the Labour Market Regulatory Authority. It issues and renews work permits, manages the expat fee, and runs Tamkeen-linked services for employers. Many resident services in Bahrain route through LMRA in parallel with NPRA and the eGovernment portal.

How do I renew an Omani residence card?

Residence cards in Oman are renewed through ROP, often with sponsor sign-off and a medical step depending on visa type. Our Oman page lists the current published fee and document checklist.

How is the Kuwait civil ID renewed?

The civil ID in Kuwait is renewed through PACI, usually after the residency stamp has been renewed by MOI. Our Kuwait page lists the sequence so you do not get stuck waiting at the wrong counter.

Visas, Residency and Sponsorship

3 questions

Can I sponsor my family on a GCC residence visa?

Most GCC countries allow residents above a minimum salary threshold to sponsor a spouse and children. The threshold and required documents differ by country, and some emirates and ministries publish their own caveats. Our country pages list the current thresholds and document checklists.

What documents typically need attestation?

Marriage certificates, birth certificates, education degrees, and good standing letters usually need attestation from the issuing country, that country's foreign ministry, the destination GCC embassy, and the destination foreign ministry. Our attestation guide walks through the full chain.

What happens if my residence visa expires?

Most GCC countries allow a short grace period. Beyond that, daily overstay fines apply and travel may be blocked until they are cleared. Our fines and overstay guides explain how to calculate the amount and where to pay before you travel.

Driving Licences

2 questions

Which nationalities can transfer their driving licence in the UAE?

The eligible nationality list is set by the RTA and other emirate authorities and is updated from time to time. Some nationalities transfer with paperwork only, others need a road test or full course. Check our UAE driving licence guide for the current list before paying any fee.

How much does a GCC driving licence cost end to end?

End-to-end costs include eye tests, theory and road tests where required, the licence fee itself, and sometimes a translation fee. Our country specific driving licence pages list the published government fees and the typical extras at the test centre or typing centre.

Fines and Overstay

2 questions

How do GCC overstay fines work?

Most GCC countries charge a per-day fee once your visa expires, with a short grace period in some cases. The exact daily rate, the grace period, and where to pay vary by country and visa type. Our fines guide shows the current rate per country and the payment route.

Can I leave a GCC country with unpaid fines?

Outstanding traffic, residency, or labour fines can block travel or trigger a hold at the airport. The safest approach is to clear everything in advance using the official portal for the country and emirate where the fine was issued.
