Quick answer: what happens after a failed Qatar theory test
Failing the Qatar theory test, the computer-based paper most people call the signals test, is common and recoverable. Nothing is added to your traffic record beyond the attempt, your learner file stays open, and you sit the paper again. What you lose is time: practical lessons cannot start until the theory is passed, and in Qatar the queue is the expensive part.
| Question | Answer | How sure it is |
|---|---|---|
| What does a retest cost? | QAR 50, the same as the first attempt. Nothing is charged when you pass | qatarliving.com and marhaba.qa, October 2026 |
| How long must I wait? | No official waiting period is published. In practice it is set by your school's test schedule | No Ministry of Interior source found |
| Is there a limit on theory attempts? | None published. The reported two-attempt limit before retraining applies to the final road test, not the theory | marhaba.qa, October 2026 |
| How do I rebook? | Through your driving school; test appointments also appear in Metrash under Traffic, then Licence Service | dohaguides.com, March 2025 |
| What margin did I miss? | The paper is reported as 40 questions with 37 to pass, so a fail means four or more wrong | marhaba.qa (2026), dohaguides.com; no MOI publication |
The single most useful thing you can do today is find out which questions you got wrong, by topic, while you still remember them. A four-mistake fail and a twelve-mistake fail need completely different plans.
Last checked: November 2026. This guide is about recovering from a fail. If you have not sat the test yet, start with the Qatar driving theory test page, which sets out the format and the signs.
What a fail actually changes in your file
In Qatar, the theory test sits early in the school route: eye test, enrolment at an approved school such as Karwa, theory lessons, the computer test, and only then practical lessons, the yard tests and the road test with a General Directorate of Traffic examiner. That order is why a theory fail matters more than its QAR 50 fee suggests.
| What stays the same | What changes |
|---|---|
| Your school enrolment and contract | Your practical lessons stay on hold until the theory is passed |
| Your learner file with the GDT | You need a new test slot, which your school allocates |
| Your eye test, unless it has expired | Your overall timeline moves back by however long that slot takes |
| The fee for the next attempt: QAR 50, as before | If your learner permit lapses while you wait, Metrash bookings can fail until it is renewed |
Two things a theory fail does not do. It does not cancel your enrolment or force you to pay the course again, and it does not count against the road-test attempts later in the process. All Qatari schools use a unified curriculum and contract (marhaba.qa), so ask your school what its contract says about extra theory classes after a fail; some include them, some charge.
The retest rules: what is published, what is reported, what is unknown
Qatar's Ministry of Interior does not publish a rulebook for theory retests that we could find. Here is the evidence, ranked by how much weight it can bear.
Fee: QAR 50 per attempt, confirmed by two sources
qatarliving.com and marhaba.qa (October 2026) both report a Ministry of Interior fee of QAR 50 per test attempt, charged again on a retest, with no fee when you pass. Figures of QAR 3,000-5,000 you see online are full school courses, not the test fee.
Attempts: no published cap on the theory
marhaba.qa reports that the final driving test allows two attempts, with retraining required if both fail. That rule is about the road test. We found no equivalent cap on theory attempts, and neither did the sources behind our GCC theory test comparison. Do not read the road-test rule as a theory rule, and do not read the absence of a cap as permission to keep sitting the paper unprepared.
Waiting period: not published
Our own Qatar data notes that a waiting period applies before a re-sit but that the Ministry does not publish its length. The waits you will read about online, two months, three to four months, four months, are almost all about the road test, from a Gulf Times report (2015) and reader comments on dohaguides.com. The theory test is run at the school on its own schedule, so the realistic wait is whatever your school's next session is. Ask the school for the date in writing when you leave.
If you came through the direct road-test route
Holders of some foreign licences are allowed straight to a road test. A Philippine embassy notice reported that if such a candidate fails, they must complete driving school training before retesting. That affects the practical stage rather than the theory, but it is a reminder that failing on a shortcut route can move you onto the full one. The tiers are explained in our Qatar driving licence guide.
How to rebook the theory test
Your school is the primary route. In Qatar you cannot approach the General Directorate of Traffic on your own for a learner's test; schools hold the schedule and the system booking.
- Before you leave the test centre, ask the school counter for the next available theory session and whether you need to attend another theory class first. Get the date written down or sent by message.
- Check Metrash. Driving test appointments appear under Traffic, then Licence Service, then Appointment License Test, where you choose your school and see available dates (dohaguides.com, March 2025). If the date you want is taken, check again early in the morning; slots open when other candidates cancel. Our Metrash guide covers sign-in and common errors.
- Pay the QAR 50 through the channel your school uses. Keep the receipt.
- Confirm the language you will sit in. Arabic and English are the confirmed options.
"LP not found" and other booking errors
Readers of dohaguides.com who saw LP not found in Metrash were told it usually means the learner's permit has expired or is not registered against their QID. The fix is through the school, not Metrash. If your QID itself is close to expiry, renew it first; see MOI Qatar for the official channels.
Diagnose the fail before you revise
On a paper with three mistakes allowed, people fail in one of three ways, and each needs a different fix.
| Pattern | Typical score | What it usually means | What to change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near miss | 33-36 of 40 | One weak topic, usually a sign family or a penalty number, plus one or two slips | Drill the weak topic only, then two full timed papers |
| Broad gap | 26-32 of 40 | Revision covered signs but not rules (right of way, roundabouts, lane use, speed limits) | Rebuild rules topic by topic before attempting another full paper |
| Language or reading | Any score, with the sense you knew the answers | Sitting in a second language; misreading negatives such as "which is NOT" | Practise in the test language; slow down on every question with a negative |
To place yourself, sit one full 40-question paper under time today, before you revise anything. Our Qatar mock test 1 uses the reported format; your first two questions are free on every test, and the full set is in the bank. Then split your wrong answers into signs, rules and penalties. The topic with the most errors is your plan.
Why near misses are the common case
At 37 of 40, a candidate who knows the material at 90% is expected to make four errors and fail. That is the arithmetic of a 92.5% pass mark, and it is why so many people who "knew it" fail the first time. You do not need to learn much more; you need to remove the topic where your errors cluster. The format and the margin are set out on the Qatar theory test page.
A retest plan: seven days, three gates
The wait for your next slot is preparation time you have already paid for. Use it with a clear finish line rather than general reading.
| Day | Do this | Gate before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Full timed paper; list every wrong answer by topic | You know your weakest topic |
| 2-3 | Weakest topic only: the road signs test or the road rules test, repeated until clean | Two clean runs in a row on that topic |
| 4 | Second-weakest topic, same method | Two clean runs in a row |
| 5 | Full timed paper (mock test 2) | 38 or more of 40 |
| 6 | Review only the questions you hesitated on, even those you got right | No hesitation on any sign |
| 7 | One more full paper | 38 or more again. If not, ask for a later slot |
The 38 threshold is deliberate. A 37 in practice is a coin toss on the day, because nerves and unfamiliar wording cost a question or two. If you are on the edge, moving the retest a week costs less than another fail.

What to change on the day
- Answer every question. A blank is a wrong answer.
- Read the last line first. Many errors come from answering what a sign means when the question asked what you must do.
- Watch for negatives. "Which is NOT permitted" catches people who are reading fast.
- Do not change answers without a reason. First instincts on signs you have drilled are usually right; changes made out of nerves usually are not.
- Use the clock. The time limit is not officially published (one site reports 35 minutes for 40 questions), so pace for under a minute a question and leave time to review the ones you flagged.
What failing really costs in Qatar
In money, very little. In time, a lot more.
| Cost | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry test fee | QAR 50 per attempt | Same on the first sitting and every retest |
| Extra theory classes | Depends on your school contract | Ask before you assume they are free |
| Time to the next slot | School-dependent; days to weeks | Practical lessons cannot start until you pass |
| Knock-on delay to the road test | Weeks | The road-test queue is the long one, and you have not joined it yet |
Three theory fails would cost QAR 150 in fees, which is trivial against a school course that commonly runs into thousands of riyals. The real cost is starting the long practical queue later. That is the reason to treat the retest as the last one rather than another try. The full cost picture, school included, is in the driving licence cost guide and the Qatar road test guide.
Failed more than once? Three situations and what to do
Second fail, close scores both times
Two scores of 35 or 36 almost always mean the same topic is costing you the same two or three questions. Look at both result sheets if you have them, or rebuild them from memory. If the same sign family or the same kind of rules question appears in both, that is the whole problem. Spend the next wait on that topic alone and do not sit again until a full paper gives you 38 twice.
Scores that are not improving
If your second score is no better than your first, more of the same revision will not help. The usual cause is revising by reading answers rather than by answering questions cold. Switch to timed papers and topic drills where you commit to an answer before you see the explanation; the bank tracks which topics you keep missing so you are not guessing.
You want to change school or language
Reader replies on dohaguides.com say moving to another school is possible if you contact the new school in advance, and that a fee may apply. Since all schools use the same curriculum and contract, moving rarely helps with the theory itself; it can help if the new school offers classes in your strongest language or sooner test dates. If you sat in English as a second language and kept misreading questions, ask whether Arabic, if it is your first language, is available at your centre.
Before you rebook: are you sure you need this test?
Qatar sorts licence holders into routes by the country that issued their licence. Holders from some countries exchange without tests; some go straight to a road test; others take the full school route, which is the one with the theory paper. If you hold a valid foreign licence and were simply enrolled without anyone checking, it is worth ten minutes to confirm your route with the conversion checker and the Qatar licence guide before you sit the paper again. If you hold a licence from another Gulf state, see GCC conversion compared.

Frequently Asked Questions
You stay enrolled, your learner file stays open, and you sit the paper again on a new date set by your driving school. Practical lessons cannot start until you pass. The retest costs QAR 50, the same as the first attempt.
QAR 50 per attempt, reported by qatarliving.com and marhaba.qa in October 2026. Nothing is charged when you pass. Your school may charge separately for extra theory classes, depending on its contract.
The Ministry of Interior does not publish a waiting period. In practice the wait is your school's next available theory session, which can be days or weeks. The waits of several months reported online are for the road test, not the theory.
No limit on theory attempts is published. The reported rule of two attempts followed by retraining applies to the final road test.
Through your driving school, which holds the schedule. Test appointments also show in Metrash under Traffic, Licence Service, Appointment License Test, where you choose your school and an available date. Slots open when others cancel, so check early in the morning.
It usually means your learner's permit has expired or is not registered against your QID. Contact your driving school to renew or register it; it cannot be fixed from Metrash.
It is reported as 37 correct out of 40, with at most three mistakes (marhaba.qa, 2026; dohaguides.com). One site gives 36 of 40. No Ministry page publishes the format, so prepare for 37.
When you score 38 or more out of 40 on two full timed practice papers in a row. A 37 in practice is too close to the line for the real test.
