Freelance Permit

A UAE freelance permit is a licence that allows an individual to work independently and bill clients legally under their own name, without forming a company. It can support a self-sponsored residence visa such as the Green Visa.

A freelance permit authorises a person to operate as an independent professional in the UAE, offering services and invoicing clients without setting up a full company structure. It is issued by various free zones and by MOHRE for certain self-employment categories, with the eligible activities depending on the issuing authority.

The freelance permit is often the basis for a self-sponsored residence route, including the Green Visa for freelancers and the self-employed. Holding the permit lets the freelancer obtain trade-related documents, open a business bank account, and demonstrate legal status to clients. The cost, renewal cycle, and permitted activities vary widely between free zones and the mainland.

If the freelance permit is cancelled or lapses, any residence visa linked to it can be affected, so the permit and the visa need to be kept in sync. Freelancers should check whether their chosen activity is covered before committing to a particular authority.
