What is GDRFA?
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) is the Dubai government authority responsible for all immigration, residency, and entry-permit matters within the Emirate of Dubai. It operates under the Dubai government and functions as Dubai's counterpart to the federal ICP, which handles the same services for most other emirates.
If your residence visa is sponsored by a Dubai-based employer, a Dubai-licensed business, or a Dubai-resident family member, your immigration files are held and processed by GDRFA, not ICP. This applies regardless of which emirate you actually live or work in on a day-to-day basis.

How to use GDRFA services
GDRFA offers services through its official portal at gdrfad.gov.ae, the GDRFA Dubai mobile app (available on iOS and Android), and through authorised Amer service centres distributed across Dubai. The general process for a Dubai residence visa renewal is:
- Confirm your visa is Dubai-sponsored. Check the issuing authority on your current residence visa, or ask your employer's HR or PRO officer.
- Gather the required documents: a valid passport, your current visa copy, and any category-specific paperwork such as an employment letter, salary certificate, or tenancy contract.
- Submit the application online via the GDRFA app or portal, or visit an Amer centre for in-person assisted processing.
- Pay the applicable government fees. Confirm current amounts on the official GDRFA portal before submitting, as fees are updated periodically.
- Complete a medical fitness test at an approved centre if required for your visa type or renewal duration.
- Collect your residence visa stamp or receive it through the service centre once the application is approved.
What expats use GDRFA for
Expatriates sponsored in Dubai use GDRFA at every stage of their residency lifecycle: obtaining an entry permit to enter the UAE, stamping the initial residence visa, renewing it when it expires, adding family members under their sponsorship, and cancelling the visa when leaving Dubai or changing employers.
GDRFA is also the authority to contact for Dubai-based overstay fines and the clearance of immigration violations before international travel. The directorate periodically announces fine-reduction or amnesty programmes through its official channels, so monitor gdrfad.gov.ae if you have an outstanding issue.
If your visa is sponsored in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, or another emirate, you will deal with ICP instead. Always verify which authority holds your file before paying fees or submitting documents to avoid processing delays.
