What is the Qatar ID (QID)?
The Qatar ID (QID) is the official identity and residence card issued by Qatar's Ministry of Interior (MOI) to Qatari citizens and all legally resident expatriates. For expatriates, the QID also functions as the physical residence permit, making it the single most important document for day-to-day life in the country. It carries the holder's unique QID number, photograph, biometric data, and the card's expiry date, which is tied to the underlying residence visa duration.
The QID number acts as the master identifier across Qatar's government and private systems, from opening a bank account and enrolling children in school to registering a vehicle and accessing public health services. Without a valid QID, most administrative and financial transactions in Qatar are effectively blocked.
How to get, check or renew your QID
The QID is not applied for independently; it is issued as part of the residence visa process, which is typically initiated by the employer or sponsor.
- Entry visa and medical: The sponsor applies for an entry permit through the MOI portal. The arriving expat completes a mandatory medical fitness test at an approved centre.
- Fingerprint and biometrics: The applicant visits an MOI service centre or designated fingerprinting location to submit biometric data.
- QID collection: Once approved, the physical card is printed and can be collected at MOI service centres or, in some cases, delivered. The Metrash app can be used to track the application status.
- Renewal: Renewals are typically initiated by the sponsor through the MOI portal or Metrash before the card's expiry. The employee may need to submit supporting documents and, in some cases, repeat a medical test.
- Status checks: Residents can check QID validity and visa status anytime through the MOI portal at portal.moi.gov.qa or via the Metrash app using the QID number or passport number.
Rules, validity and cost
The QID's validity period mirrors the residence permit, which for most employment-based residencies is one or two years but can vary depending on visa type. Renewing the QID on time is the sponsor's and employee's shared responsibility; a lapsed QID can attract overstay fines starting from the day after expiry. Costs associated with the QID process include MOI fees for the residence permit, medical examination fees, and any typing or service-centre charges. Exact fees are set by the MOI and change periodically; always confirm current rates through the official portal or an MOI service centre before paying.
What expats should know
Because the QID doubles as the residence permit, losing or damaging the card requires an immediate replacement application at the MOI. Residents should keep a digital copy of their QID number and the card's expiry date in a secure location.
