A visa status change (change of status) is an in-country procedure that adjusts a person's immigration status without a border run. The most frequent case is converting a visit or tourist visa into an employment residence visa or a family residence visa while the person stays in the UAE.
The process is handled through GDRFA or ICP and, for work cases, runs alongside a MOHRE work permit. After the status is changed, the resident typically completes the medical fitness test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping. Whether a status change is allowed or whether a quick exit and re-entry is cheaper depends on the current visa, nationality, and the sponsor's setup.
A status change carries its own government fee and must be done before the existing visa or entry permit expires, otherwise overstay fines may apply. Timelines and eligibility can shift with policy updates, so the current rules at the time of application govern.
