What This Guide Covers

Renewing your LMRA work permit is one of the most important administrative tasks you will face as an expat in Bahrain. Miss the deadline and you risk fines, a forced exit, and a ban from re-entering — all of which can derail months of career progress. Get it right and it is a straightforward, mostly employer-driven process that concludes in a matter of days.

This guide walks through every stage of the 2026 renewal cycle: which documents you need and in what format, how the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) portal works, what fees are due and who pays them, how your CPR card ties into the renewal, and what happens if your permit lapses. Whether you are on a standard employer-sponsored permit, a flexi permit, or navigating a mid-renewal job change, you will find the relevant process mapped out in detail below.

Two points before you begin. First, the work permit issued by LMRA and the residence permit (managed by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs — NPRA, under the Ministry of Interior) are separate documents that are renewed on overlapping but distinct timelines. This guide focuses on the LMRA work permit; your employer or a registered PRO handles the residence permit in parallel. Second, Bahrain's LMRA system is updated periodically — always cross-check fees and form numbers against the live lmra.gov.bh portal before submission.

Understanding Bahrain's Work Permit System

Bahrain manages its expatriate workforce through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), an independent government body established in 2006. Every non-Bahraini working in the Kingdom must hold a valid work permit issued by LMRA. The permit authorises a specific employer–employee relationship (or, in the case of the Flexi Permit, self-directed work activity) and must be renewed before expiry to maintain legal working status.

Understanding which permit type you hold is the first step, because the renewal process, fees, and responsible party differ significantly across categories.

Permit TypeIssued ToSponsorStandard ValidityWho Initiates Renewal
Standard Work PermitExpat employeeBahraini employer1 or 2 yearsEmployer / PRO
Domestic Worker PermitHousehold workersIndividual Bahraini sponsor2 yearsSponsor / household head

Golden Residency PermitInvestors / skilled professionalsNone (self)5 or 10 yearsPermit holder (self)
Free Zone Work PermitWorkers in Bahrain International Investment Park / free zonesFree zone company1 or 2 yearsEmployer

The vast majority of expats in Bahrain hold a standard work permit tied to a Bahraini-registered employer. Everything in sections 3–13 of this guide applies primarily to that category. Flexi permit holders should also read section 14, which covers the separate self-renewal path.

When to Start Your Renewal

Timing is everything in permit renewal. LMRA allows applications to be submitted up to three months before the permit's expiry date. Starting early gives you a buffer for document rejections, medical rescheduling, and the employer's internal approval chains — all of which routinely eat up two to four weeks.

As a rule of thumb, begin gathering documents 90 days out, submit the application 60 days out, and expect approval within 7–15 working days under normal volumes. During peak renewal seasons (December–January and June–July, when large construction and hospitality companies run batch renewals), LMRA processing can stretch to 21 working days.

Days Before ExpiryRecommended ActionRisk if You Wait
90 daysNotify employer's HR / PRO; request document checklistLow — you have full runway
60 daysComplete medical fitness test; submit application on LMRA portalModerate — allows one rejection and re-submission
30 daysExpedite if not already submitted; pay any outstanding leviesHigh — any delay pushes you past expiry
0–30 days (lapsed)Grace period applies; pay fine and renew immediatelyVery high — fines accruing daily; exit may be forced
30+ days lapsedConsult a registered PRO urgently; deportation order possibleCritical — potential ban from re-entry

One frequently overlooked trigger: if your passport expires within six months of the work permit renewal date, LMRA will reject the application. Renew your passport first, then proceed. This single oversight is responsible for a significant share of stalled renewals.

Documents Required for Work Permit Renewal

The document set for a standard work permit renewal has grown more structured since LMRA introduced its fully digitised portal in 2023. All scanned documents must be clear, colour copies in PDF or JPEG format, under 2 MB per file. Documents in Arabic require no translation; documents in other languages require an official Arabic translation authenticated by the Ministry of Justice.

Employee-Side Documents

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months' remaining validity beyond the requested permit period)
  • Current CPR card (Central Population Registry card — both sides)
  • Current LMRA work permit (front page showing permit number and expiry)
  • Medical Fitness Certificate issued within the last three months by a Ministry of Health-approved clinic
  • One recent passport-sized photograph on a white background
  • Academic or professional qualification certificates (for first renewal only, or if your job title is changing)

Employer-Side Documents

  • Valid Commercial Registration (CR) certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MOIC)
  • LMRA company account credentials (CR number and company access code)
  • Labour Market Regulatory Fee (LMRF) payment receipts confirming zero outstanding levy balance
  • Signed employment contract matching the job title registered on the work permit
  • Labour clearance certificate (issued automatically when no outstanding LMRA violations exist)

A note on the employment contract: LMRA cross-references the job title on your contract against the occupational category registered in your work permit file. If the two do not match — a common outcome after internal promotions or title changes — the renewal will be flagged for manual review and may require a formal job-change request to be processed first. Resolve title discrepancies before submitting the renewal.

Step-by-Step LMRA Renewal Process

The renewal process is driven by the employer through the LMRA business portal, though the employee must provide documents and attend the medical appointment. Here is the complete sequence, from initiation to permit collection.

  1. Employee notification. Ideally 90 days before expiry, notify your HR department or the company's PRO (Public Relations Officer) in writing that your permit is due for renewal. Keep a copy of this notification — it is useful evidence if the employer delays and a fine accrues.
  2. Medical fitness appointment. Book a slot at a Ministry of Health-approved clinic. Do not attend a clinic that is not on the approved list — LMRA will reject certificates from unapproved facilities. Bring your passport and CPR card. Common tests include a chest X-ray (tuberculosis screening), HIV/blood-borne disease panel, and a general physical examination. Results are typically issued within 48–72 hours.
  3. Employer clears outstanding levies. Before any renewal application can be submitted, the employer must have zero outstanding Labour Market Regulatory Fees. The LMRA portal will block submission if levies are in arrears. Confirm this is cleared before handing over your documents.
  4. Employer logs into LMRA business portal. Using the company's registered credentials at lmra.gov.bh, the PRO navigates to Work Permit Services > Renew Work Permit and searches for the employee by CPR number or permit number.
  5. Document upload. The portal prompts upload of each required document in sequence. File size limits are enforced; compress scans if necessary. The portal validates file format before proceeding.
  6. Fee payment. After document upload, the portal generates a payment invoice. Payment is made via BenefitPay, Bahrain eBanking, or debit card directly on the LMRA portal. Credit card payments are not universally accepted — confirm payment method availability. Keep the payment confirmation reference number.
  7. Application submitted — reference number issued. The portal issues a transaction reference number (TRN). Save this immediately; it is used to track application status and for any follow-up queries.
  8. LMRA review period. Processing takes 7–15 working days under standard volume conditions. The employer can check status at any time under Work Permit Services > Permit Status using the TRN.
  9. Approval notification. LMRA sends an SMS and email notification to the employer's registered contact. The renewed work permit is available for download as a PDF from the portal immediately upon approval.
  10. CPR update. Once the work permit is renewed, the iGA (Information and eGovernment Authority) must update the residence stamp on the employee's CPR file. This is done either at an iGA service centre or through the employer via the integrated LMRA–iGA system, depending on the permit category. The physical CPR card may need to be reprinted if the expiry date embossed on it differs from the new permit expiry.
  11. Employee retains copies. Download and save the renewed work permit PDF. Store it alongside your passport and CPR card. You have a legal obligation to be able to produce your valid work permit upon request by authorities.

The entire process — from medical test to approved permit in hand — typically runs 10–20 calendar days when started on time. Delays are almost always caused by outstanding levy balances, document quality rejections, or a mismatch between the employee's job title on the contract versus the LMRA record.

Complete Fee Breakdown for 2026

Fees for LMRA work permit renewal in Bahrain are split between two components: the work permit fee charged per worker, and the Labour Market Regulatory Fee (LMRF) paid by the employer quarterly. Both must be settled for a renewal to proceed. All fees are denominated in Bahraini Dinars (BHD).

Fee ItemPaid ByAmount (BHD)Frequency
Work permit renewal — 1 yearEmployer (or employee by agreement)200Per renewal
Work permit renewal — 2 yearsEmployer (or employee by agreement)400Per renewal
LMRA portal processing feeEmployer10Per transaction
Labour Market Regulatory Fee (LMRF)Employer200/year (BHD 50/quarter)Quarterly, per expat worker
Medical Fitness Certificate — MoH clinicEmployee (usually reimbursed by employer)15–25Per medical examination
CPR card reprint (if needed)Employee3Per card
Late renewal fine (within grace period)Employer primarily, employee secondarily10 per dayPer day lapsed
Maximum fine (grace period cap)Employer / employee300Cap within 30-day grace period
Flexi Permit renewal — 1 yearPermit holder (self)450Per renewal
Flexi Permit renewal — 6 monthsPermit holder (self)225Per renewal

Two notes on fee responsibility: Bahraini law (Labour Law No. 36 of 2012) places the cost of the work permit squarely on the employer. It is illegal for an employer to deduct work permit fees from an employee's salary unless the employee has separately agreed in writing. If your employer is asking you to bear the BHD 200 renewal cost without a written agreement, document the request — it may constitute a violation reportable to LMRA.

The LMRF (BHD 50 per quarter, per expat worker) is always an employer liability and cannot legally be passed to the employee under any circumstances. Employers who are delinquent on LMRF payments will find all their pending permit applications frozen on the portal until arrears are settled.

Employer Responsibilities and Labour Clearance

In Bahrain's sponsored work permit system, the employer carries the majority of the administrative and financial burden. Understanding where the employer's obligations end and the employee's begin prevents confusion and helps employees hold their sponsors accountable.

What the Employer Must Do

  • Keep the company's Commercial Registration (CR) current and renewed with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce
  • Pay all LMRF instalments on time (BHD 50 per expat worker per quarter) to maintain a clear LMRA account
  • Initiate the work permit renewal application on the LMRA portal before the employee's permit expires
  • Pay the work permit renewal fee (BHD 200 per year) — this is an employer obligation under Bahraini law
  • Ensure the employment contract on file with LMRA matches the employee's current job title
  • Maintain zero outstanding violations on the LMRA company account (unpaid fines, unresolved complaints, or flagged employees block all renewals)
  • Coordinate with the iGA to update the employee's residence record once the work permit is renewed

What the Employee Must Do

  • Notify the employer's HR or PRO at least 90 days before permit expiry (in writing)
  • Attend and complete the medical fitness examination at an approved clinic
  • Provide a valid, in-date passport (renew early if it will expire within six months of the requested work permit period)
  • Provide a copy of the current CPR card
  • Alert HR immediately if the job title on the LMRA file differs from the current role

The concept of labour clearance is central to the employer's obligations. LMRA automatically generates a labour clearance certificate from the employer's company account — it confirms the company has no unresolved violations, no runaway worker complaints, no pending court orders, and no outstanding levy. This certificate is required to submit any new or renewed work permit. If labour clearance is blocked, every employee at the company faces a renewal freeze, regardless of individual circumstances. Employees should ask their HR team to confirm labour clearance status early in the renewal cycle.

Grace Period Rules and Overstay Consequences

Bahrain provides a 30-day grace period after a work permit expires, during which the employee and employer can still renew without triggering a formal overstay violation. However, fines do accrue from day one of expiry, so the grace period is not a penalty-free zone — it is simply the window before consequences escalate from financial to legal.

Period After ExpiryStatusFineRenewal Still Possible?Other Consequences
Day 1–30Grace periodBHD 10/day (max BHD 300)Yes — standard renewal processCPR flagged; some services restricted
Day 31–90OverstayBHD 300 + additional penaltiesRequires LMRA exception processEmployer fined separately; employee may be barred from travel
Day 91+Illegal residencyEscalating; potential court referralCase-by-case; deportation likelyDeportation order; re-entry ban (6 months to lifetime)

The fine cap of BHD 300 within the 30-day grace period applies to the LMRA work permit fine specifically. The immigration side (NPRA) may levy separate fines for an overstayed residence visa, which are calculated at a different rate. Do not assume the BHD 300 cap covers all your exposure.

If your permit has lapsed and you are in the grace period, do not travel outside Bahrain. Exiting the country with an expired work permit will mean you are unable to re-enter on the same permit, and you may be flagged at the airport. Resolve the renewal while remaining in Bahrain.

Employer Liability for Lapsed Permits

LMRA holds employers jointly responsible for expired work permits. If the employer fails to initiate renewal before the permit lapses, the company faces its own fine schedule, separate from the employee's overstay fine. Repeat violations can result in the company's LMRA account being suspended, blocking all future hiring and renewals across the entire workforce. This gives employees legitimate leverage: document all written requests to HR and keep copies in case you need to demonstrate to LMRA that the lapse was the employer's fault, not yours.

Common Mistakes That Derail Renewals

The following are the most common reasons work permit renewals in Bahrain are delayed, rejected, or result in fines — all of them preventable with early action and good document hygiene.

  1. Waiting until the permit expires. The single most avoidable mistake. Processing takes 7–21 working days; if you submit with less than three weeks remaining, any complication will push you past expiry. Start at 90 days.
  2. Passport validity below the required threshold. LMRA requires the passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the requested permit period. A passport with, say, eight months remaining will not support a one-year permit renewal. Book a passport appointment at your home country's embassy in Bahrain well in advance.
  3. Expired CPR card at submission. The LMRA portal performs a live CPR check at the time of submission. An expired CPR blocks submission immediately. Renew CPR first, then submit the work permit renewal.
  4. Outstanding LMRF balance on the employer's account. Employers who have missed quarterly levy payments (BHD 50/quarter per worker) cannot submit any renewal. Employees often discover this problem only after waiting weeks, assuming the PRO has submitted. Proactively ask your HR to confirm the LMRA account is clear.
  5. Medical certificate from an unapproved clinic. LMRA maintains a list of approved medical fitness centres. Attending a non-approved clinic means the certificate will be rejected. Check the current approved list on lmra.gov.bh before booking.
  6. Medical certificate older than three months. If your renewal takes longer than expected and the medical certificate you obtained at the start of the process is now more than three months old, you will need a new one. Budget for this if processing delays occur.
  7. Job title mismatch between contract and LMRA record. If you received a promotion or title change and the employer never updated the LMRA file, the renewal will be flagged. The employer must first submit a job-change request, which is a separate process that can take 5–10 working days.
  8. Company CR expired. If the employer's Commercial Registration has lapsed, the company cannot initiate any LMRA transaction. The employer must renew the CR with MOIC before work permit renewals can proceed.
  9. Document scan quality below portal standards. Blurry, rotated, or underexposed scans are rejected by the portal's automated document validation. Use a proper scanner or a scanning app with auto-enhance; do not photograph documents in dim light.
  10. Not checking application status after submission. Submission is not approval. Check the application status on the portal every three to four working days using the TRN. If the status changes to "Additional Information Required," you have a limited window to respond before the application is closed.

A good operational discipline: calendar two reminders at the 90-day and 60-day marks before expiry, and make a habit of checking your LMRA work permit status on lmra.gov.bh every six months. The verification tool is public and free — use it.

Special Situations: Job Changes, Company Closures, and Promotions

The standard renewal process assumes the employee remains at the same company in the same role throughout the renewal cycle. Several common real-world situations complicate this, each requiring a slightly different approach.

Changing Jobs During or Around Renewal

If you are transferring to a new employer, the process changes: instead of a renewal, you need a work permit transfer (also called a sponsorship transfer). The new employer initiates this on the LMRA portal under Work Permit Services > Transfer Work Permit. Critically, the new employer can only initiate a transfer if your current permit is valid — you cannot transfer an expired permit. If the transfer and renewal timelines overlap awkwardly, consult a registered PRO to sequence the actions correctly.

Under Bahrain's flexible labour market rules introduced in 2021, workers with at least one year of continuous employment can transfer to a new employer without the current employer's consent, provided no wage complaints or court cases are outstanding. The transfer fee is BHD 200, the same as a renewal.

Company Closure or Liquidation

If your employer's company closes while your permit is valid, the company's LMRA account is typically frozen during liquidation proceedings. Work permits under a frozen account cannot be renewed normally. In this scenario:

  • Contact LMRA directly at the Diplomatic Area headquarters and explain the situation
  • File a wage complaint at LMRA if wages are owed — this creates an official record and may grant you an extended grace period
  • The Labour Market Regulatory Fund (administered by LMRA) provides some wage protection for workers stranded by bankrupt companies
  • You may be granted a temporary status to seek new employment; a registered PRO can navigate this process

Promotion or Title Change Before Renewal

A promotion does not automatically update your LMRA file. The employer must submit a work permit amendment request (also called a job-change request) on the portal to align the registered job title with the new role. This should be done at the time of the promotion — not six months later when the renewal reveals the discrepancy. If the amendment and renewal overlap, submit the amendment first, wait for approval, and then initiate the renewal.

Salary Below the Registered Threshold

Some work permit categories in Bahrain are linked to minimum salary thresholds (notably management and professional categories). If your actual salary has fallen below the registered threshold — after a restructuring, for example — the renewal may trigger a category downgrade review. Address this with your employer's HR before renewal to avoid complications.

Medical Fitness Certificate — Requirements and Process

A valid Medical Fitness Certificate is a mandatory component of every LMRA work permit renewal for standard-category workers. The certificate must be issued by a Ministry of Health-approved clinic or hospital, and it must be dated within three months of the renewal application submission date.

Approved Medical Facilities (Partial List)

LMRA maintains a full approved list at lmra.gov.bh. As of mid-2026, commonly used approved facilities include:

  • Al Razi Specialized Hospital — Manama, dedicated expat medical service window
  • Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Hospital — Riffa, private patient services available
  • King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) — Al Muharraq, expatriate health unit
  • International Hospital of Bahrain (IHB) — Manama
  • Ministry of Health Primary Healthcare Centres — selected centres designated for expat medical fitness; call ahead to confirm

What the Examination Involves

  • Chest X-ray — screens for tuberculosis and other pulmonary conditions; this is mandatory
  • Blood tests — screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis, and other notifiable conditions
  • Physical examination — general health assessment; blood pressure, weight, BMI
  • Urinalysis — at some centres

Results are transmitted directly from the approved clinic to the LMRA system electronically. You receive a printed certificate to bring to your employer, and the digital record is visible on the LMRA portal once processed. Do not attempt to submit a renewal before the medical result has been uploaded to the LMRA system — the portal validates the digital record, not just the paper certificate.

Fees for the medical examination range from BHD 15 at Ministry of Health centres to BHD 25–40 at private approved hospitals. The examination fee is typically borne by the employee but is often reimbursed by employers, particularly in larger companies. Confirm your company's reimbursement policy before you pay.

Flexi Permit Holders — A Different Renewal Path

Flexi Permit holders in Bahrain operate outside the traditional employer-sponsored system. Instead of a company renewing on their behalf, Flexi Permit holders are fully responsible for their own renewal — including sourcing the funds, submitting the application, and managing all required documents independently.

To renew a Flexi Permit, log into your individual LMRA account at lmra.gov.bh using your CPR number and password. Navigate to Flexi Permit Services > Renew Flexi Permit. Upload your medical fitness certificate, valid passport copy, and CPR card copy. Pay the renewal fee (BHD 450 for 12 months or BHD 225 for 6 months) via BenefitPay or eBanking. The process typically concludes in 3–5 working days — faster than standard permit renewals because there is no employer document chain to process.

Note that the Flexi Permit does not cover family sponsorship. If you need to sponsor dependants, you must hold a standard employer-sponsored permit or a Golden Residency. If you are on a Flexi Permit and planning to bring a family member, consult an immigration specialist on your options before acting.

After Renewal: Next Steps and What Changes

Once LMRA approves the renewal and you have downloaded the permit PDF, there are several follow-on actions to take to ensure everything is fully aligned across Bahrain's linked government systems.

Immediate Post-Renewal Steps

  • Download and save the permit PDF. Store it in a secure cloud folder (Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive) and email a copy to yourself. The PDF is your primary proof of legal work status until the CPR is updated.
  • Verify the permit on lmra.gov.bh. Use the public permit verification tool to confirm the new expiry date is correctly recorded against your CPR number in the LMRA database. This takes 1–2 working days after approval.
  • Check iGA residency update. Log into the iGA app or Bahrain.bh portal using your CPR credentials. Confirm the residence permit expiry date has been updated to match the new work permit. If it has not updated within 3 working days, contact your employer's PRO or visit an iGA centre.
  • Request a CPR card reprint if needed. If the expiry date on your physical CPR card will become inconsistent with the new permit period, request a reprint for BHD 3 via the iGA app or in-person at an iGA service centre.
  • Update your employer's HR file. Provide a copy of the renewed permit to your employer's HR department for their records and for any future banking, visa, or government service requirements.
  • Update bank records if required. Some Bahraini banks (particularly for account reviews or credit facilities) require proof of a valid work permit. If your bank's annual KYC review is due, proactively upload the renewed permit via your banking app or branch visit.

Finally, immediately set a reminder in your calendar for 90 days before the new permit's expiry date. The renewal cycle then begins again. Consistent early action is the only reliable way to stay compliant across a multi-year stay in Bahrain.

Your Renewal Checklist and Timeline Summary

Use this checklist as your master reference for each renewal cycle. Work through it in sequence, starting three months before your permit expires.

Consistent early action — not heroic last-minute scrambling — is what keeps your Bahrain work status seamless. The checklist above, followed every renewal cycle, makes the entire process routine rather than stressful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under normal processing volumes, LMRA approves work permit renewals within 7 to 15 working days from the date of a complete, error-free submission. During peak renewal seasons — typically December through January and June through July — processing can extend to 21 working days as large companies submit batch renewals simultaneously. This is why starting the process at 90 days before expiry is strongly recommended: even if processing takes the full 21 days and one rejection occurs requiring re-submission, you still complete the renewal before expiry with time to spare. Employers can check the live status of any open application at any time using the Transaction Reference Number (TRN) on the LMRA business portal. Once approved, the renewed permit PDF is available for immediate download and the iGA system is updated within 2 to 3 working days.

If your LMRA work permit lapses, Bahrain provides a 30-day grace period during which you can still renew without triggering a formal illegal residency status. However, fines begin accruing from day one of expiry at BHD 10 per day, capped at BHD 300 within the 30-day grace window. Beyond 30 days, you enter overstay territory: fines increase, the employer faces separate penalties, your CPR is flagged across government systems, and you may be barred from departing Bahrain until the matter is resolved. Beyond 90 days, LMRA can refer the case for deportation proceedings and a re-entry ban. Do not travel outside Bahrain while your permit is expired and in the grace period — exiting on an expired permit means you cannot re-enter on the same work permit status. Resolve the renewal from inside Bahrain first.

Under Bahrain's Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, the cost of the work permit is the employer's obligation. The BHD 200 per-year renewal fee (or BHD 400 for a two-year permit) must be paid by the employer. It is illegal for an employer to deduct this cost from the employee's salary or require the employee to pay it unless the employee has separately agreed in writing. The Labour Market Regulatory Fee (LMRF) — BHD 50 per quarter per expat worker — is also exclusively an employer liability and cannot under any circumstances be passed to the employee. In practice, some employers do ask employees to cover renewal costs, particularly in smaller companies or informal sectors. If this is happening to you, document the request and consider filing an inquiry with LMRA, which investigates such complaints as potential labour law violations.

If you have moved to a new employer, you do not renew the existing work permit — you transfer it. The new employer initiates a work permit transfer (also called a sponsorship transfer) through the LMRA business portal under the Work Permit Transfer service. The key requirement is that your current work permit must still be valid at the time of the transfer request. You cannot transfer an expired permit. Under Bahrain's flexible labour market reforms enacted in 2021, workers with at least one year of continuous service can transfer to a new employer without requiring consent from the current employer, provided no wage disputes or court cases are outstanding. The transfer fee is BHD 200 — the same as a standard renewal. If your permit is expiring while the transfer is being processed, your new employer should submit the transfer application well before expiry to avoid a lapse.

The medical fitness examination for LMRA work permit renewal in Bahrain includes a mandatory chest X-ray (to screen for tuberculosis and other pulmonary conditions), a blood panel testing for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and syphilis, a general physical examination including blood pressure and weight assessment, and urinalysis at some centres. The examination must be conducted at a clinic or hospital on LMRA's approved list — attending an unapproved facility will result in the certificate being rejected outright. Results are transmitted electronically from the approved clinic to the LMRA system, and the digital record must be visible on the portal before a renewal application can proceed. The certificate is valid for three months from the date of issue. If your renewal is delayed for any reason and the certificate ages past three months before the application is submitted, you will need to repeat the examination. Fees range from BHD 15 at Ministry of Health centres to BHD 25–40 at private approved hospitals.

The work permit renewal application itself is submitted online through the LMRA portal and can technically be initiated regardless of where you are geographically — it is the employer's PRO who submits, not the employee in person. However, being outside Bahrain at the time of renewal creates several practical complications. If the permit has already expired and you are outside Bahrain, re-entry on an expired work permit status is generally not permitted. The medical fitness certificate must be obtained at an approved clinic inside Bahrain, so you would need to return to complete that step. Some categories of permit renewal require the employee's presence for biometric verification or document authentication. The safest approach is always to complete the renewal while you are in Bahrain. If you have an upcoming long absence, time it carefully so the renewal is approved before you leave, or return to Bahrain well before expiry.

Always renew the CPR card first if it is expiring before or around the same time as your work permit. The LMRA portal performs a live CPR status check at the time the employer submits a renewal application. If the CPR is expired at that moment, the portal will block submission immediately — no exceptions. Renewing the CPR card through the iGA app, iGA service centres, or the Bahrain.bh portal costs BHD 3 and is typically processed within one to two working days. Once the CPR is renewed and showing a current status, the employer can proceed with the LMRA work permit renewal application. Note that the reverse is also important: once your work permit is renewed, you may need the physical CPR card reprinted (BHD 3) if the expiry date embossed on it does not align with the new permit period. The systems are linked, but the physical card does not update automatically.

The Labour Market Regulatory Fee (LMRF) is a quarterly levy paid by employers for each non-Bahraini worker on their payroll. As of 2026, the rate is BHD 50 per quarter per expat worker (BHD 200 annually). This fee funds LMRA's regulatory operations, Bahraini employment initiatives, and the Labour Market Fund which protects workers stranded by bankrupt employers. The critical link to your renewal is this: LMRA's portal will not allow an employer to submit any work permit application — new, renewal, or transfer — if there is an outstanding LMRF balance on the company's account. This means that if your employer has missed quarterly levy payments across the entire workforce, your individual renewal is blocked even though you personally have done nothing wrong. As an employee, your protection is to ask HR to confirm LMRA account clearance at least 60 days before your permit expires. If the employer has arrears that are preventing your renewal, document your requests in writing — this becomes relevant if fines accrue due to employer delay.

The LMRA provides a free, public permit verification tool at lmra.gov.bh that any person can use without logging in. Navigate to the Work Permit Verification section and enter either your CPR number or your work permit number. The tool returns the permit holder's name, permit number, current permit type, employer name, permit issue date, and permit expiry date. This is the most reliable source for your current permit status — more reliable than the physical permit document, which may show an older expiry if an extension was processed recently. Use this tool every six months as routine maintenance to confirm your records are current. For employers or PROs tracking a submitted renewal application, the status check within the LMRA business portal (under Work Permit Services > Permit Status, using the TRN) provides more granular information including whether additional documents have been requested or whether the application is in a specific review stage.

If your employer is refusing to renew your work permit — or is deliberately delaying to prevent you from leaving — this constitutes a potential labour law violation in Bahrain. Your first step is to document everything: send written requests via email or WhatsApp, keep copies, and note all dates. If the situation does not resolve, you have several official channels. You can file a complaint with LMRA directly, which investigates employer violations including permit-related misconduct. You can also file a wage and employment complaint with the Ministry of Labour (MoL) through the Bahrain.bh portal or in person at the MoL service centre. Under Bahrain's flexible labour market rules, workers with one or more years of continuous service do not need employer consent to transfer to a new employer — so a refusal to renew is not necessarily a trap if you have that tenure. If wages are owed, the Labour Market Fund may provide temporary financial protection while the dispute is resolved. Contact LMRA or a registered PRO firm to understand the current options specific to your situation.

A two-year renewal (BHD 400) covers a longer period and reduces administrative overhead — fewer renewals, fewer medical fitness appointments over the same timeframe, and less time spent coordinating with the employer's PRO. If you have strong job security at your current company and your passport is valid for the full two-year period plus the required six-month buffer, a two-year renewal is generally the more efficient choice. However, if there is any possibility of a job change, company restructuring, or a move to a different permit category within the next two years, a one-year renewal gives you more flexibility. Unused permit periods are not refunded if you transfer employers or cancel the permit early. Flexi Permit holders can choose between a six-month renewal (BHD 225) and a one-year renewal (BHD 450); there is no two-year option available for that permit category as of 2026.

In Bahrain, these are two legally distinct documents managed by two different government bodies. The work permit is issued by LMRA (Labour Market Regulatory Authority) and authorises you to work for a specific employer (or, for Flexi Permit holders, to work independently). The residence permit is a visa status — formally managed by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) under the Ministry of Interior — that authorises you to legally reside in Bahrain. In practice, the two are closely linked: your LMRA work permit renewal triggers an update to your residence status in the NPRA/iGA system. For standard employer-sponsored workers, the employer (through the PRO) handles both processes in sequence: LMRA work permit renewal is submitted first, and once approved, the residence record is updated via the integrated LMRA–iGA data link. In most cases you do not need to make a separate trip to the immigration office. However, if your residence status requires a separate visa renewal (less common for long-term residents, more common for certain categories), your employer's PRO will advise. Always confirm with HR which documents are being renewed in parallel.
