Quick answer: what you need and what it costs
To sponsor your wife and children on a UAE family residence visa in 2026 you need a monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation, a valid residence visa and Emirates ID of your own, attested marriage and birth certificates, and proof of suitable housing. There is no profession restriction at this salary tier.
The cost depends almost entirely on one choice: whether your family applies from outside the UAE on an entry permit, or is already inside the country and needs a status change. Inside costs roughly double, because the status adjustment fee alone is AED 500.
| Item | Position in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Minimum salary | AED 4,000/month, or AED 3,000 + employer accommodation |
| Who you can sponsor | Spouse, sons under 25, unmarried daughters (no age limit), children with special needs at any age |
| Authority | ICP for every emirate except Dubai; GDRFA for Dubai |
| Entry permit validity | 60 days to enter the UAE |
| Medical fitness test | Required for dependents aged 18 and over only |
| Visa validity | 1, 2 or 3 years, tied to your own visa |
| Realistic cost, from outside UAE | Roughly AED 1,100-1,400 per dependent |
| Realistic cost, from inside UAE | Roughly AED 2,400-2,700 per dependent |
This guide covers the standard case: an employed resident bringing over a spouse and children. If your salary falls short, see the low salary workarounds guide. If you are sponsoring parents, that is a different and much higher threshold, covered in the parent sponsorship guide. Verify every fee against ICP or GDRFA before you pay.
What salary do you need to sponsor family in the UAE?
The UAE government portal states the threshold plainly: a sponsor needs a minimum salary of AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 per month plus accommodation provided by the employer. That is the whole rule for a spouse and children, and unlike Qatar or Kuwait there is no profession gate attached to it.
The accommodation variant, and what it really means
The AED 3,000 route is not a discount you claim by ticking a box. Your employer must genuinely provide accommodation and be willing to document it, usually through a company letter or the housing clause in your labour contract. A cash housing allowance paid into your account is not the same thing, and typing centres will tell you so at the counter.
Where higher numbers come from
You will hear AED 5,000 or AED 6,000 quoted at typing centres, and AED 10,000 for female sponsors. These are not the federal rule. They reflect emirate-level practice, particular case types, and in some instances simply an agent's caution. The federal published figure is AED 4,000, and applications are assessed against the published rule plus whatever the processing authority asks for in your specific file.
Can a wife sponsor her husband or children?
This is the area where the official simplification and on-the-ground practice have not fully converged, so we will be careful. The current government portal wording does not carve out a separate female-sponsor rule. Longstanding practitioner guidance, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, still describes a higher bar for a woman sponsoring family: either a salary around AED 10,000, or a residence permit showing a profession such as teacher, doctor, engineer or nurse with a lower salary requirement and special permission from the relevant authority. A husband who can sponsor the children himself typically blocks the wife from doing so.
Our reading is that the official language has unified while emirate practice may not have. If you are a female sponsor, confirm with GDRFA or ICP for your specific emirate and profession before you spend anything. Compare thresholds across the region in the GCC salary requirements guide.
Who can you sponsor on a UAE family visa?
The scope is wider than most Gulf states, particularly for daughters, and narrower than people hope for parents.
| Relationship | Eligible? | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Wife or husband | Yes | Attested marriage certificate, legalised through MOFAIC |
| Sons under 18 | Yes | Attested birth certificate |
| Sons 18 to 25 | Yes, if studying | Proof of full-time enrolment; medical test now required |
| Sons over 25 | No | Need their own employment or study visa |
| Unmarried daughters | Yes, no age limit | Must remain unmarried; medical required from 18 |
| Children with special needs | Yes, any age | Supporting documentation |
| Newborns | Yes | Must be sponsored within 120 days of birth |
| Stepchildren | Yes, with consent | NOC from the biological parent plus custody evidence |
| Parents | Separate route | Much higher salary bar, annual visa, deposit and insurance |
The three cases with their own guides
Some dependents have enough complexity to deserve their own treatment, and we have written them separately rather than compressing them here:
- Newborns have a hard 120-day deadline from birth, after which fines accrue. See the newborn visa guide.
- Stepchildren need an NOC from the biological parent and custody proof, with attestation complications by nationality. See the stepchild sponsorship guide.
- Dependents turning 18 face a new medical fitness requirement at their next renewal. See the over-18 dependent medical guide.
Parents are genuinely a different product: an annual, renewable visa with a much higher salary requirement, mandatory insurance and usually a refundable deposit. Treat it as a separate application, not an extension of the family file.
ICP or GDRFA: which authority handles your application?
Before you touch a form you need to know which of two federal and local authorities owns your case, because they have different portals, different fee lines and different published service times.
The split in one line
GDRFA handles Dubai. ICP handles everywhere else. That is the rule. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security governs residence and family sponsorship across the UAE, while Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs runs its own parallel system for cases filed in Dubai.
| Aspect | ICP (all emirates except Dubai) | GDRFA (Dubai) |
|---|---|---|
| Online channel | ICP Smart Services and the UAEICP app | GDRFA Dubai portal |
| In-person channel | Typing centres and Tasheel | Amer centres |
| Login | UAE Pass preferred for instant verification | UAE Pass or portal account |
| Published processing | About 2 days for the administrative step | 48 hours for the residence permit service |
| Stated grace period | Tiered by category, 30 to 180 days | 60 days for family members |
Which one applies is determined by where the file sits, not by where you live day to day. If your employment and visa are registered in Dubai, you are a GDRFA case. If they are in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or the northern emirates, you are an ICP case. Our guide to Tasheel, Amer, Tasjeel and Tadbeer explains which service centre does what, and the e-channel and establishment card guide covers the employer-side plumbing that has to be working before any of this proceeds.
Documents required for a UAE family visa
ICP publishes its own required-documents list for issuing a residency permit. We have marked which items are on that official list and which are consistently requested in practice but not formally published.
| Document | Source | The detail that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Dependent's passport | Official ICP | At least six months validity remaining |
| Personal photograph | Official ICP | White background, per specification |
| Health insurance policy | Official ICP | Must be active before the permit is issued |
| Utility bill | Official ICP | DEWA or equivalent, as proof of address |
| Employment certificate or labour contract | Official ICP | Proof of financial solvency; property documents accepted as an alternative |
| Medical fitness report | Official ICP | For applicants aged 18 and over only |
| Marriage contract or birth certificate | Official ICP | Proof of kinship; must be attested if issued abroad |
| Attested marriage certificate | Practice | Full legalisation chain ending at MOFAIC |
| Attested birth certificates | Practice | Same chain, one per child |
| Sponsor's Emirates ID | Practice | Valid, not expired or under renewal |
| Ejari or tenancy contract, or title deed | Practice | Housing proof; must be consistent with household size |
| Salary certificate | Practice | Recent, stating the qualifying salary |
| Entry permit copy | Practice | Where the dependent entered on one |
Two items do most of the damage when they go wrong. The attestation chain on foreign marriage and birth certificates is the classic rejection cause and is covered in its own section next. And Ejari matters more than people expect: a studio tenancy will not comfortably support a family of five on paper. Our Ejari registration guide covers getting that right.
Attestation: why most family visa files fail here
A foreign marriage certificate that has not completed legalisation is treated as no certificate at all. This is stated bluntly across UAE attestation guidance: an unattested document means the application will be rejected or delayed.
The chain
- Home-country authentication by the issuing or state authority. In India this is the state layer that catches everyone out; in Pakistan it runs through NADRA.
- Home-country Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation.
- UAE embassy or consulate in that country legalises the document.
- MOFAIC in the UAE applies the final attestation.
Apostille is not a shortcut
If you married in a country that issues apostilles, that alone is generally not sufficient for UAE family visa purposes in the way people assume. The rules differ by country of issue, and getting this wrong sends a certificate back across an ocean. Our apostille versus attestation guide breaks it down country by country, and the marriage certificate attestation guide walks the full chain with fees and timelines.
Start before everything else
Attestation runs weeks, not days, and frequently requires the physical document to travel. Every other step in this guide is fast by comparison. The families who get family visas quickly began attestation before they started thinking about forms.
If your certificates are still in a drawer in another country, the UAE family sponsorship service runs the home-country legalisation while you handle the UAE side. Tell us what you have and we will tell you what is missing.
The UAE family visa process, step by step
There are two routes through the same destination, and picking the right one saves both money and stress.
Route A: dependent outside the UAE (cheaper)
- Apply for an entry permit through ICP Smart Services, the UAEICP app, or the GDRFA Dubai portal if you are a Dubai case.
- Receive the entry permit, which is valid 60 days for your family to enter the UAE.
- Family travels and enters on the permit.
- Medical fitness test at an approved centre, for dependents aged 18 and over only.
- Emirates ID application and biometrics, at a typing centre, Amer centre or through the app.
- Residence visa issuance and e-visa stamping.
Route B: dependent already inside the UAE (more expensive)
If your family is already here on a visit or tourist visa, you add a status change step, which carries a AED 500 adjustment fee at both ICP and GDRFA plus assorted smaller charges. Everything else is the same. This is the single biggest cost variable in the whole process.
The sequencing advice
- If your family has not yet travelled, do not bring them on a visit visa and then convert. File the entry permit first and have them arrive on it. You save roughly AED 1,000 per person.
- Apply for the residence visa within 60 days of entry. The entry permit window and the application window are both 60 days, which people conflate.
- Book the medical early. For adult dependents this is the step most likely to bottleneck, especially around holidays.
ICP publishes a processing time of about two days for its own administrative step and GDRFA quotes 48 hours. Both are honest about their own portion and silent about yours. Realistically, from entry to Emirates ID in hand, plan on one to three weeks.
UAE family visa fees in 2026
These are the published fee lines from each authority's own service pages. Amounts are per dependent unless noted.
ICP, all emirates except Dubai
| Fee line | Amount (AED) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | 100 | Per transaction |
| Residence permit issuance | 100 per year | Scales with the validity you choose |
| Smart service fee | 100 | Per transaction |
| Status adjustment | 500 | Only if applying from inside the UAE |
| Financial security deposit | 20 | Per transaction |
| Financial guarantee, family residency | 3,000 | Guarantee, not a charge; refundable in principle |
| Entry permit, single entry | 100 | With a refundable AED 1,000 guarantee |
| Overstay fine | 50 per day | After the grace period ends |
GDRFA Dubai
| Fee line | Amount (AED) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Residence permit | 200 | Family member residence permit service |
| Knowledge Dirham | 10 | Standard UAE levy |
| Innovation Dirham | 10 | Standard UAE levy |
| Fee inside country | 500 | Status change surcharge |
| Delivery fee | 20 | Per card |
| Additional validity year | 100 per year beyond 2 years | If extending validity |
| Status amendment, main fee | 500 | Plus AED 15 individual and AED 50 establishment fees |
The costs outside the authorities' fee tables
- Medical fitness test: roughly AED 320 to 500 depending on emirate and service tier, with express options costing more. Figures conflict between sources, so confirm at booking. See the medical fitness test guide.
- Emirates ID: approximately AED 100 per year of card validity plus a service or typing charge, with Fawri express adding around AED 150. See the Emirates ID typing fees guide.
- Health insurance: a private-market cost, with Dubai basic packages starting around AED 320 per year. Not a government fee but a hard precondition.
- Typing centre charges: AED 30 to 70 per transaction if you do not file yourself.
Realistic all-in totals
Adding it up, an adult dependent filed from outside the UAE typically lands around AED 1,280 to 1,380, and a child around AED 1,100. Filed from inside with a status change, the same adult runs roughly AED 2,380 to 2,660. Those totals come from practitioner breakdowns rather than an official schedule, so treat them as planning figures.
The medical fitness test: who needs it and who does not
The UAE rule is refreshingly clear: the medical fitness report is required for applicants aged 18 and over. Children under 18 are exempt, including newborns.
What it screens for
The residence-visa medical is a communicable disease screen rather than a general health check: blood tests covering HIV and hepatitis B, and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis. It is a pass or fail gate on the visa, and an unfit result blocks issuance.
The age-18 trap at renewal
The requirement bites hardest not at first issuance but at the first renewal after a child turns 18. A family that has renewed three children for years without a single medical suddenly faces one, and the renewal takes longer than expected. The over-18 dependent medical guide covers this specific transition in full.
If the result comes back unfit
An unfit result is serious but not always final, and there are defined routes depending on the finding. Our unfit result options guide sets out what can and cannot be appealed. Be very wary of anyone promising to change a result; that route ends in bans rather than visas.
Separate from the pre-arrival medical
If your family is coming from one of the countries covered by the Wafid system, formerly GAMCA, they may also face a pre-departure screening at home. That is a different exam with a different certificate and a 60-day validity. See the Wafid and GAMCA guide so you do not pay for one expecting it to cover the other.
Health insurance: a hard precondition, not a formality
Health insurance appears on ICP's official required-documents list for every family visa service page, which tells you how it is treated: no active policy, no residence permit.
Where the requirement stands across the emirates
- Dubai and Abu Dhabi have required sponsor-provided cover for years. In Abu Dhabi the sponsor must cover the employee plus one spouse and up to three children under 18.
- The northern emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah) mandated employer-provided health insurance as a condition of issuing or renewing residency from 1 January 2025, aligning with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This is widely reported by law firms; we have not confirmed it against a primary regulatory text.
- Whether the northern emirates mandate extends to dependents as opposed to employees alone is described as still evolving. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, dependent cover has been a hard precondition for years regardless.
Practical guidance
Buy cover that is active before you file, not after. The commonly cited Dubai basic package starts around AED 320 per year, covering ages one to 64 with claims cover up to AED 150,000 and no chronic-illness waiting period. Confirm current pricing and scope with the health authority or an insurer before quoting it to anyone. A lapsed policy also blocks renewals, as our lapsed insurance guide explains.
How long does a UAE family visa take, and how long does it last?
Two questions people ask together, with quite different answers.
Validity
Standard dependent residence permits are granted for one, two or three years, tied to your own visa and contract duration. A dependent's visa cannot outlast the sponsor's. Longer options exist outside the standard route: five-year visas for family of UAE citizens, and five-year renewable family sponsorship under the Golden and Green residency schemes. See the Golden Visa requirements guide if you may qualify, since it changes the family picture substantially.
Timeline
| Stage | Realistic duration |
|---|---|
| Attestation of certificates | Weeks, sometimes months; start first |
| Entry permit issuance | About 2 days administrative (ICP), 48 hours (GDRFA) |
| Window to enter the UAE | 60 days from permit issue |
| Medical fitness test and result | 1 to 3 days standard, same-day express |
| Emirates ID biometrics to card | Several days to two weeks |
| Entry to residence visa in hand | 1 to 3 weeks typically |
The pattern is the same as everywhere in the Gulf: the government steps are fast and the document preparation is slow. If someone tells you a UAE family visa takes two days, they are quoting the portal's own processing time for one step, not the journey.
Why UAE family visa applications get rejected
Neither ICP nor GDRFA publishes a list of rejection reasons. These are the recurring causes seen in practice, and notably most are documentary rather than substantive.
- Salary or housing below the category threshold. Either the salary does not reach AED 4,000, or the AED 3,000 accommodation route is claimed without employer-provided housing being genuinely documented.
- Missing or incorrect attestation on the marriage or birth certificate. The most common single cause.
- Mismatched personal details across documents. Name spelling, date of birth, passport number, or a previous UID that does not reconcile. Maiden-name versus married-name mismatches are the classic.
- An unresolved prior UAE record. A previous residency or visit visa not properly cancelled in the system blocks the new file. Our visa status check guide shows how to look before you file.
- Unpaid fines or prior violations, including overstay amounts on an earlier visit.
- Incomplete or expired medical, Emirates ID or insurance documentation.
- Tenancy not matching household size or the sponsor's declared address. A one-bedroom Ejari and a family of six raises questions.
- Security or background flags, which are rarely explained and generally need professional handling.
If you have already been rejected on salary grounds specifically, the low salary workarounds guide covers the accommodation letter route, joint sponsorship and the appeal process in detail. Whatever you do, never submit an altered salary certificate; it is a career-ending move, not a workaround.
After the visa is issued: what you have signed up for
Getting the visa is the start of an ongoing obligation, and the follow-on duties are where sponsors get caught out later.
- Renewal. Dependent visas renew on their own cycle, and the window typically opens 30 days before expiry. See our UAE family visa renewal guide for the process, fees and grace period tiers.
- Late renewal costs money. The overstay fine is a flat AED 50 per day after the applicable grace period, and one lapsed dependent can block the family's other transactions. The late dependent visa fine guide covers calculation and payment.
- The 180-day absence rule. A dependent who stays outside the UAE for six continuous months without re-entering can have their visa cancelled automatically. This applies to dependents the same as to primary holders.
- Cancellation order matters. When you leave the UAE or change status, dependents and any domestic worker must be cancelled before the sponsor. Get this backwards and you create an expensive mess, as the cancellation order guide explains.
- Your status is their status. If your own visa is cancelled, every dependent visa falls with it. The government portal describes a six-month grace period for dependents to obtain a new permit in that situation.
The mental model to hold: a family residence visa is not a document you obtain, it is a compliance position you maintain, on behalf of people who cannot maintain it themselves.
Get the family file right the first time
A UAE family residence visa is a very winnable application. The salary rule is published and modest, there is no profession gate, the authorities publish their fees, and the failure modes are concentrated in attestation and document consistency. The families who sail through attested their certificates early, filed the entry permit before travelling rather than converting a visit visa, and checked that every name matched on every page.
Wathim prepares and files UAE family sponsorship end to end: eligibility review, the full attestation chain in your home country, the ICP or GDRFA application, medical booking, Emirates ID, and the renewal cycle afterwards. Tell us about your family and we will map the file, or read more on the UAE family sponsorship service and the UAE residency visa service.

Frequently Asked Questions
AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 per month if your employer provides accommodation, as published on the UAE government portal. Unlike Qatar or Kuwait, there is no profession restriction attached to this tier. The accommodation route requires genuine employer-provided housing documented by a company letter or contract clause, not a cash housing allowance.
ICP lists the dependent's passport, a white-background photograph, an active health insurance policy, a utility bill as proof of address, an employment certificate or labour contract, a medical fitness report for those aged 18 and over, and an attested marriage contract or birth certificate. In practice you also need your Emirates ID, Ejari or title deed, and a salary certificate.
It depends on whether you file from outside or inside the country. From outside on an entry permit, an adult dependent typically costs around AED 1,280 to 1,380 all in. From inside the UAE with a status change, the same dependent runs roughly AED 2,380 to 2,660, because the status adjustment fee alone is AED 500 at both ICP and GDRFA.
Before, almost always. Filing an entry permit while they are still abroad and having them arrive on it avoids the AED 500 status adjustment fee plus associated charges, saving roughly AED 1,000 per person. Bringing family in on a visit visa and converting in-country is legal but is the single biggest avoidable cost in the whole process.
GDRFA handles Dubai cases and ICP handles every other emirate. Which applies is determined by where your employment and visa are registered, not where you live day to day. ICP runs Smart Services and the UAEICP app with typing centres in person; GDRFA runs its own Dubai portal with Amer centres. Their fee lines differ.
Only if they are aged 18 or over. The medical fitness report is required for applicants 18 and above, and children under 18 including newborns are exempt. The requirement typically first bites at the renewal after a child turns 18, which catches families who have renewed for years without ever booking a medical.
Yes, up to age 25 if he is in full-time study, with proof of enrolment required. Beyond 25 he needs his own employment or study visa. Unmarried daughters are treated differently and have no upper age limit while they remain unmarried. Children with special needs can be sponsored at any age with supporting documentation.
ICP publishes about two days for its administrative step and GDRFA quotes 48 hours, but those cover only the authority's own processing. Realistically, from your family's entry to Emirates ID in hand, plan on one to three weeks. The attestation of marriage and birth certificates beforehand takes weeks and is the real bottleneck.
Yes. Health insurance appears on ICP's official required-documents list for family visa services, so no active policy means no residence permit. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have required sponsor-provided dependent cover for years, and the northern emirates mandated employer-provided insurance as a residency condition from January 2025. Dubai basic packages start around AED 320 per year.
The most common causes are missing or incorrect attestation on the marriage or birth certificate, salary or housing falling below the category threshold, and mismatched personal details across documents such as a maiden-name discrepancy. Others include an unresolved prior UAE visa record, unpaid fines, expired medical or insurance documents, and tenancy that does not match household size.
One, two or three years, tied to your own visa and contract duration, since a dependent's visa cannot outlast the sponsor's. Longer options exist outside the standard route: five-year visas for family members of UAE citizens, and five-year renewable family sponsorship under the Golden and Green residency schemes if you qualify for those.
Every dependent visa falls with the sponsor's. The UAE government portal describes a six-month grace period for dependents to obtain a new residence permit from the date their visas expire or are cancelled. Note also the cancellation order rule: dependents and any domestic worker must be cancelled before the sponsor, not after.
