What is Residence Visa in UAE?
The UAE residence visa is the residency permission granted to expatriates sponsored by an employer, a family member, a free zone authority, a property investment, a retirement scheme, or one of the long-term Golden or Green Visa programmes. Since November 2022 the visa is fully electronic: there is no sticker in the passport any more, and the Emirates ID has become the working proof of residency at airports, banks, hospitals, schools, and traffic stops. The federal authority that issues and tracks the visa depends on the emirate that originally opened your file. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) handles residency in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, while the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) handles every Dubai-issued visa from start to finish.
Which authority owns your file is decided at issuance and does not change just because you move emirate. A worker who started on an Abu Dhabi free zone visa keeps that ICP file even after moving into a Dubai Marina apartment, and a Jebel Ali warehouse manager whose visa was opened by JAFZA remains in the GDRFA system even if his family lives in Sharjah. Using the wrong portal is the single most common cause of the dreaded 'No Record Found' result when residents try to check their visa status by passport number, so the very first thing to confirm is which authority opened the file.
Day-to-day, most of the work happens inside the ICP UAE Smart Services app, the GDRFA Dubai app, or UAE Pass. Almost every transaction (new application, renewal, cancellation, fines payment, dependant linking) can be completed digitally, with the exception of two unavoidable in-person steps: the fit-to-residence medical test at a DHA, SEHA or approved private centre, and, for first-time issuance or whenever ICP flags that your biometric record is stale (usually after about 10 years or a name change), an Emirates ID biometrics capture at a Customer Happiness Centre. Everything else, including paying the fee, choosing the validity length and uploading the health insurance certificate, is now an in-app journey.
Three things changed dramatically in 2026 that residents should know about. First, the daily overstay penalty was unified at AED 50 per day across all emirates and all visa categories from 11 February 2026, replacing an older patchwork of AED 100 to AED 250 first-day fines for tourist visas. Second, the old 'labour ban' that used to lock workers out of the country for six months has been effectively obsolete since the 2022 labour law reform; only narrow employer-file suspensions remain. Third, the Golden Visa real-estate route was loosened in February 2026: the previous requirement that you had to have paid at least AED 1 million (or 50%) of the property value upfront was removed, so a mortgaged property is now eligible as long as its total value reaches AED 2 million.
Failures at renewal almost always trace back to one of four root causes, and a five-minute pre-flight check saves a day or two of frustration. The first is an unpaid traffic fine, Salik balance, or immigration fine attached to the passport. The second is an expired or unlinked health insurance policy: the portal will not even let you press 'Submit' if the insurer has not pushed a valid certificate to ICP/GDRFA. The third is a stale medical fitness result (medicals are valid for only three months from the test date). The fourth is mismatched data between your passport bio page and the file: a renewed passport with a different number, a name spelt slightly differently in Arabic, or a missing 'father's name' field will all silently stall the renewal until corrected at a typing centre.
Finally, there is a quiet rule that catches long-distance commuters and digital nomads: a standard residence visa is automatically cancelled if you stay outside the UAE for more than six consecutive months. Golden and Green Visa holders have a much longer outside-country tolerance (often 180 days or more, with no upper cap in practice for Golden), but everyone else needs to plan trips home so that they touch UAE soil at least once every six months. Coming back after the file is cancelled means a fresh entry permit, fresh medical, fresh Emirates ID issuance and, often, a fresh employer or family sponsor.

Link health insurance and salary information
Before the file can be finalised, the insurer has to push a valid policy certificate to ICP/GDRFA. Most insurers do this within hours of payment; if the policy does not appear in the file by the next day, the sponsor calls the insurer's broker line and asks them to repush. Employer-sponsored visas also rely on the establishment having WPS salary records that are no more than five days behind, otherwise MOHRE blocks the file.

Stamping and Emirates ID printing
