Residence Permit (RP) in Qatar

Convert your work visa into a Residence Permit through MOI Qatar - usually done within a week if medical and biometrics clear.

Last verified: 2026-06

Overview

The Qatar Residence Permit (RP) is the sponsored residency status that lets expatriates live and work in Qatar. It is issued by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and physically represented by the Qatar ID (QID) card. New arrivals enter on a work entry visa and must complete medical screening, fingerprinting, and the RP application within roughly 30 days.

Most RP transactions, including renewals, address changes, and dependent linking, are handled through the MOI Qatar portal (portal.moi.gov.qa) or the Metrash mobile app. Sponsors (employers) drive most of the workflow, but residents can check application status and visa validity through MOI's public 'Visa Services' page using their passport number and nationality.

Where to do it online

  • MOI Qatar

RP issuance, renewal, visa status check by passport number

  • Metrash

Mobile RP renewal, dependent management, fee payment

MOI service centres and authorised typing offices can complete RP renewals if your HR is unavailable - bring original passport and QID.

Renewal

RP is renewed annually through Metrash or the MOI portal. Renewals can be filed up to 90 days before expiry and require valid health insurance and a valid passport.

Fines & penalties

  • Late RP renewal: QAR 10 per day of delay
  • Working with an expired RP can lead to deportation and re-entry ban
  • Outstanding traffic fines block RP renewal

Common pitfalls

  • Missing the 30-day window after entry triggers daily overstay charges
  • Trying to renew with an expired health insurance policy - the system rejects it
  • Forgetting unpaid traffic fines that block the renewal silently
  • Assuming the QID and RP are separate documents - the QID card is your RP

FAQs

Go to portal.moi.gov.qa, choose 'Visa Services' > 'Visa Inquiry & Printing'. Enter your visa number or passport number with nationality to see current status. No login is required.

Yes, if you are registered on Metrash with the same mobile number linked to your QID. Pay fees via debit card. Otherwise your employer's PRO files it through the MOI portal.

You can usually re-enter on the QID within 6 months of last exit; beyond that the RP is cancelled and a new entry visa is required.

No. The QID card is the physical evidence of your Residence Permit; both share the same expiry date.

Since 2020 reforms, expats can transfer jobs by giving notice through the Ministry of Labour without an NOC. The new employer then files the RP transfer through MOI.

Skip the hassle

A vetted typing centre can handle the paperwork end-to-end.
