LMRA Residence Permit in Bahrain

In Bahrain, residence runs through LMRA for workers and NPRA for everyone else - your CPR card is the proof.

Last verified: 2026-06

Overview

Bahrain's residence framework is split between the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), which issues and renews work visas for private-sector expats, and the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) at the Ministry of Interior, which handles family, investor, and self-sponsored permits. The visible outcome of either route is the CPR (ID) card, which encodes your residence status.

Most expat workers never see a sticker visa anymore: the LMRA work visa is electronic, linked to the sponsor's establishment, and tied to a mandatory health-insurance contribution. Renewal is initiated by the employer through the LMRA Expat Management System, with monthly LMRA fees that must be current. Family and dependent residence is filed through bahrain.bh (eKey) by the sponsor once their own permit and salary threshold are confirmed.

Step by step

  1. 1

Sponsor files the work visa on LMRA EMS

The employer logs into the LMRA Expat Management System (ems.lmra.bh), submits the visa application against their quota, and uploads the contract and passport copy.

    1-2 days · online

  2. 2

Pay fees and insurance through eKey

Sponsor pays LMRA fees and the SEHATI health-insurance contribution online. The system will not approve a visa with unpaid monthly fees on the establishment.

  3. 3

    Pre-arrival visa approval

Once approved, LMRA emails a pre-approval letter. You travel to Bahrain on this letter; no consular sticker is needed.

    3-5 working days · online

  4. 4

    Medical fitness on arrival

Within 30 days of arrival, complete medical fitness at a designated government clinic. Fail results in visa cancellation.

  5. 5

    CPR card issuance at IGA

Sponsor's PRO books an appointment at the Information & eGovernment Authority (IGA) for biometrics. The CPR card is printed and collected the same week.

Processing time: 5-10 working days from sponsor application to CPR issuance, assuming medical and fees are clear.

Where to do it online

  • LMRA

Work visa issuance, renewal, transfer, fee payment, and 'lmra visa check' by CPR or passport

  • Bahrain.bh

eKey login for NPRA family residence, CPR services, and bahrain visa check by passport number

Most actions are now sponsor-side online. Tasheel-style typing centres are not common in Bahrain; LMRA accredited service offices handle in-person support for SMEs.

Renewal

Work visas are typically issued for 2 years and renewed by the sponsor through LMRA EMS before expiry. Renewal requires up-to-date monthly LMRA fees, valid health insurance, and no labour disputes on file. A 30-day grace period applies after expiry; beyond that, daily fines accrue.

Fines & penalties

  • Late visa renewal: BHD fine accrues daily after the grace period (confirm current amount on lmra.bh)
  • Working for a non-sponsor employer: visa cancellation and possible deportation
  • Unpaid LMRA monthly fees: visa renewal blocked; sponsor may lose quota
  • Overstay after cancellation: BHD per day plus travel ban

Common pitfalls

  • Travelling before completing the in-Bahrain medical - the work visa lapses
  • Assuming the LMRA pre-approval letter is the CPR - it is not; you still need IGA biometrics
  • Sponsor forgetting monthly LMRA payments, blocking your renewal months later
  • Switching jobs without a proper LMRA transfer (formerly 'Flexi' / now 'LMRA Self-Sponsorship' rules)

FAQs

Open lmra.bh, choose 'Expat Services' then 'Visa Validity', and enter your CPR number or passport number with nationality. The system shows visa type, expiry, and sponsor establishment.

Yes. The LMRA portal and the NPRA visa-status page on bahrain.bh both allow checks by passport number plus nationality, useful if you have not yet received your CPR.

By law, the LMRA visa issuance and monthly fees are the sponsor's obligation. Some employers contractually pass insurance contributions to staff; check your contract.

Outside narrow categories (investor, Golden Residency, GCC nationals' spouses), there is no broad self-sponsorship. The previous Flexi Permit was phased out and replaced with stricter LMRA-managed schemes.

You enter a 30-day grace period to find a new sponsor and file an LMRA transfer, or to leave Bahrain. After 30 days, overstay fines start accruing.
