UAE Residence Visa Renewal 2026: Cost, ICP and GDRFA Steps, Medical, Emirates ID and Timeline

Renewing a UAE residence visa in 2026 means four linked steps — health insurance, the medical fitness test, the residence permit itself and the Emirates ID — filed through ICP or GDRFA depending on which emirate issued your file. This guide gives the published ICP fees, the full cost picture, the step-by-step process on both systems, the documents, a realistic timeline, the grace period rules that changed, and the blockers that quietly stall renewals.

Quick answer: what a UAE residence visa renewal costs and how long it takes

Renewing a UAE residence visa in 2026 realistically costs most employees and family members roughly AED 1,100 to AED 3,500 per person once the immigration fees, the medical fitness test, the Emirates ID and a compliant health insurance policy are all counted, and it takes about one to three weeks from the day the file is opened to the day the new permit and card are live. It applies to anyone whose UAE residence permit is approaching expiry — employees, sponsored spouses and children, investors, students and domestic workers.

Question 2026 answer
Who renews itYour sponsor — employer, free zone, or the family member who sponsors you
Which authorityGDRFA for Dubai-issued files; ICP for every other emirate
Core government feeAED 100 application + AED 100 smart service + AED 100 per year of residency (ICP published rates)
Emirates IDAED 100 per year of visa validity, plus AED 100 smart service; AED 150 more for urgent
Medical fitness testRequired again at every renewal for anyone aged 18 and over
Health insuranceMandatory; the file will not complete without an active policy
ICP stated processing time2 days for the immigration step alone
Overstay fine if you miss itAED 50 per day

The immigration transaction itself is fast. What stretches a renewal to two or three weeks is everything bolted to it: the medical appointment, the insurance policy, the biometric capture where it is needed, and — on company files — the sponsor's own paperwork being in order. Government fees change; treat every figure here as a planning baseline and confirm the live amount on the ICP or GDRFA channel that applies to your file before you pay.

What a UAE residence visa renewal actually includes

People say "renew my visa" as if it were one transaction. It is not. A UAE residence renewal is a bundle of four linked steps, and any one of them can stall the whole thing:

  1. The medical fitness test. Every renewal applicant aged 18 and over sits the screening again. It is not a one-time entry requirement — it repeats at each renewal.
  2. Health insurance. An active, compliant policy has to exist in the system before immigration will complete the file. A lapsed policy is one of the most common silent blockers.
  3. The residence permit itself. The renewal transaction filed with ICP or GDRFA, which replaces the expiring permit with a new one. This is the step people mean by visa stamping, although the permit has been electronic for years now and there is no longer a sticker in most passports.
  4. The Emirates ID. Renewed alongside the visa, on the same application, with the new card issued for the same duration as the new permit.

Because they are chained, the order matters. The medical result has to be in the system before the permit is issued, and the permit has to be issued before the Emirates ID card is printed. A renewal that "hasn't moved in a week" is almost always sitting behind one of these four, not behind a mysterious immigration backlog.

One structural point worth internalising: you are almost never the applicant. Your sponsor is. An employee's renewal is filed by the employer or its PRO through the company's e-channel or establishment account; a wife's or child's renewal is filed by the sponsoring resident. If your sponsor's own file is blocked, yours cannot move, however clean your own paperwork is.

When can you renew, and how early?

The practical rule is to start the renewal about 30 days before expiry. That is long enough to absorb a failed medical re-test, an insurance policy that has not synced, or a sponsor who is slow to act, and short enough that you are not renewing a permit that still has months to run.

Two official reference points are worth knowing:

  • Emirates ID can be renewed from six months before expiry. ICP publishes this window for the card, which in practice means the ID side of the bundle is never the constraint.
  • Very early residence renewals need permission. ICP's own guidance is that if you need to renew the residence visa unusually early — roughly one to six months ahead, typically because of travel — you must obtain special approval from ICP first rather than simply filing it.

What ICP does not publish is a single "renewal opens X days before expiry" number for the residence permit across all categories, so do not build a plan around a precise day-count you read on a forum. Build it around the expiry date on your permit and work backwards.

If you are not certain when your permit actually expires — and the date on an old passport sticker is not reliable — check it directly first. Our guide to checking UAE visa status by passport number walks through both the ICP and GDRFA lookups and explains what each status code means.

ICP or GDRFA: which authority handles your renewal?

The UAE runs two residency systems, and the one that applies to you follows the emirate that issued your file, not where you live or work today.

Your file was issued in Authority Where you renew
DubaiGDRFA DubaiGDRFA Dubai website/app, or an Amer centre
Abu DhabiICPICP Smart Services website/app, or a Tasheel/typing centre
Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah, UAQICPICP Smart Services website/app, or a typing centre
A free zoneICP or GDRFA, depending on the free zone's emirateUsually through the free zone's own portal, which files into the right system

This trips people up constantly. A Dubai-issued employment visa stays a GDRFA file even if you move to Sharjah. An Abu Dhabi file stays with ICP even if you commute to Dubai daily. If you file in the wrong system, you do not get a rejection so much as nothing at all — the transaction simply will not find your record.

Many readers are told to identify their system by the prefix on their immigration file number. It is a widely repeated shortcut, and it does correlate in practice, but we have not been able to confirm the prefix-to-emirate mapping against an official ICP or GDRFA publication, so treat it as a hint rather than a rule. The reliable test is simpler: which emirate issued the visa. If you genuinely cannot tell, run the status check on both portals — the one that returns your record is your system.

Free zone residents are a special case. Most large free zones (DMCC, JAFZA, DAFZA, Dubai Internet City, ADGM, and the northern-emirate zones) operate their own immigration portals and file on your behalf. You will usually deal with the free zone's service desk rather than with ICP or GDRFA directly, and the free zone sets its own service charges on top of the government fee.

Step by step: renewing through ICP (all emirates except Dubai)

ICP's residency service runs through the ICP Smart Services website and the UAEICP app, and it is available around the clock. The flow ICP itself publishes is short:

  1. Submit the request through your chosen channel — the ICP app or website, a Customer Happiness Centre, or an approved typing centre acting on the sponsor's behalf.
  2. Review and adjust the data the system pulls from your existing record. Names, passport number and sponsor details are pre-filled; check them character by character against your passport, because a mismatch here is the single most common cause of a stuck file.
  3. Attach documents the system cannot retrieve automatically — typically a fresh passport copy, a photo, and the insurance policy if it has not synced.
  4. Pay the fees online. The transaction will not progress unfunded.
  5. Complete the medical fitness test and, where required, biometrics. The medical result flows back into the system electronically.
  6. Track the status in the app, and wait for notification. The new Emirates ID is couriered to the address on file rather than collected.

ICP states a processing time of two days for the residency transaction itself. Read that literally: it is two days for the immigration decision once the file is complete and paid, not two days from the moment you decide to renew. The medical, the insurance and the card printing and delivery sit outside that window.

ICP's published requirements for the service are a passport valid for at least six months, a personal photograph meeting specification, and valid health insurance for most categories.

Step by step: renewing through GDRFA Dubai

If your file is Dubai-issued, the same logical steps apply but the channel differs. GDRFA Dubai operates its own website and app, and Dubai additionally has the Amer centre network — accredited service centres that file immigration transactions for individuals and companies. Amer is the Dubai counterpart to the Tasheel and typing-centre route used elsewhere, and for most residents it is the path of least resistance.

  1. Your sponsor opens the renewal on the GDRFA channel or through an Amer centre. Company files usually go through the employer's PRO.
  2. Medical fitness test at a DHA-approved centre in Dubai. Dubai has a dense network of centres with same-day and express options.
  3. Health insurance must be active under Dubai's mandatory health insurance regime before the permit issues.
  4. Emirates ID application is filed alongside, with biometrics captured where the system asks for them.
  5. Permit issued electronically, Emirates ID printed and delivered.

GDRFA does not publish a single consolidated fee schedule in a form we can cite cleanly, and Amer centres add their own service charge on top of the government fee. Expect the Dubai route to land slightly higher all-in than the equivalent ICP transaction once centre charges are included — budget for it rather than being surprised by it. If you want to understand the two systems side by side in more depth, our guide to Amer, Tasheel, Tasjeel and Tadbeer explains which centre does what.

The medical fitness test on renewal: who takes it and what it involves

Every renewal applicant aged 18 and over takes the medical fitness test again. Children under 18 are generally exempt from the screening as part of a residence renewal, which is why a family renewal often means two adult medicals and no child medicals.

The renewal medical is the same core screening as the first-time test: a blood draw and a chest X-ray, looking primarily for communicable diseases. Results normally return within a couple of working days on standard service, faster on express tiers. Where you go depends on the emirate:

  • Dubai — DHA-approved medical fitness centres.
  • Abu Dhabi — SEHA screening centres.
  • Northern emirates — Emirates Health Services (EHS) centres.

Each authority runs tiered pricing — a standard service, a faster express tier, and in some centres a VIP tier — and the gap between them is often a day or two of processing rather than a different test. We were unable to retrieve current published fee schedules from DHA, SEHA or EHS at the time of writing, so we will not quote a number here; check the centre's live price list, and be aware that express tiers can multiply the standard fee several times over. Our UAE medical fitness test guide covers what is screened, how results are read, and the occupational categories that face additional tests.

One renewal-specific trap: an existing resident who has developed a screenable condition since their last test can be marked unfit at renewal, not just at first entry. If that happens, do not panic and do not disappear — read what an unfit result actually means before making any decision about leaving the country.

Emirates ID renewal: the fee structure nobody explains clearly

The Emirates ID renews on the same application as the visa, and its fee is structured per year of visa validity rather than as a flat card price. ICP publishes the following:

Item ICP published fee
Emirates ID for expat residentsAED 100 per year of visa validity
Smart service feeAED 100
Urgent (fawri) serviceAED 150 additional
Late renewal fineAED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000
Earliest renewalUp to 6 months before expiry

So a two-year employment visa means roughly AED 200 of card fee plus the AED 100 smart service charge; a three-year visa means about AED 300 plus AED 100. A ten-year Golden Visa card is priced on the same per-year logic, which is why Golden Visa card fees look large next to a standard renewal — you are paying a decade up front.

The AED 20 per day late fine is separate from, and additive to, the AED 50 per day residence overstay fine. A family that lets a renewal slide by two months can accumulate both simultaneously across several people. The cap on the ID fine is AED 1,000 per card; the residence fine has no equivalent published cap, which is why the residence side is the more expensive thing to neglect.

Our dedicated Emirates ID renewal guide covers the card in isolation — biometrics, the typing-centre route, delivery and tracking — if the card is the only thing you are dealing with.

Health insurance: the requirement that quietly blocks files

Valid health insurance is a stated requirement on ICP's residency service, and in practice the file will not complete without a policy showing as active in the system. This is where a surprising number of renewals die.

Three things go wrong repeatedly:

  • The policy lapsed and nobody noticed. An employer changed insurer, or a family policy expired on a different date from the visa, and the renewal hits a wall.
  • The policy exists but has not synced. The insurer issued it, but it has not propagated to the immigration system yet. This resolves with time, not with resubmitting — resubmitting just burns fees.
  • The policy does not meet the emirate's minimum. Dubai and Abu Dhabi both run mandatory health insurance regimes with defined minimum benefit packages; a cheap policy bought to satisfy a visit visa will not satisfy a residence renewal.

Buy or renew the policy before you open the immigration transaction, and allow a day or two for it to appear. If your renewal is already blocked on an insurance issue, our guide to a lapsed UAE health insurance policy blocking a renewal covers the fix and the fine exposure.

Separately, employees on mainland contracts should check their ILOE unemployment insurance subscription is paid. It is a small amount — AED 5 plus VAT per month for basic salaries at or below AED 16,000, AED 10 plus VAT above that — but an unpaid ILOE balance is a well-known cause of a blocked renewal. See what to do when an ILOE fine blocks your visa renewal.

What does a UAE residence visa renewal cost in 2026?

Here is the full picture, built from ICP's published fees plus the cost lines that sit around them. Fees marked as published are ICP's own; the rest are realistic planning ranges that vary by emirate, centre and insurer.

Cost line Amount (AED) Notes
Residency fee100 per year of validityICP published rate
Application fee100ICP published rate
Smart service fee (residency)100ICP published rate
Emirates ID100 per year of validityICP published rate
Smart service fee (Emirates ID)100ICP published rate
Urgent Emirates ID (optional)150ICP published rate; only if you need speed
Medical fitness testVaries by emirate and tierStandard vs express vs VIP; confirm with DHA/SEHA/EHS
Health insuranceVaries widelyAnnual premium; must meet the emirate's minimum package
Typing centre / Amer / PRO serviceCommercial chargeNot a government fee; varies by centre
Free zone service charge (if applicable)Set by the free zoneOften the largest single line on a free zone file
Late residence fine50 per dayOnly if you let it expire
Late Emirates ID fine20 per day, max 1,000Additive to the above

Two structural points. First, the government fee is the small part. On a two-year employment renewal the ICP-published fees total roughly AED 600; the medical, the insurance premium and the service charge are what move the number. Second, who pays depends on the category. On an employment visa the employer bears the cost by law and cannot lawfully deduct it from salary — that is covered in detail in our employer cost guide. On a family visa, the sponsoring resident pays everything.

If you would rather not assemble this yourself across a medical centre, an insurer and a typing centre while a deadline runs, our desk handles UAE residence renewals end to end — see the UAE residency visa service or tell us your expiry date and we will tell you what your file actually needs.

Documents and timeline: what to have ready, and how long each step takes

Gather everything before you start. A renewal that stops halfway to chase a document is a renewal that risks the expiry date.

The two-day figure is ICP's own for the residency transaction. Everything else is the real world around it, which is why a renewal started the week before expiry is a renewal that will probably overstay.

Renewing a family or dependent visa: what changes

Sponsoring a spouse, children or parents changes the renewal in three specific ways.

Your visa caps theirs. A dependent's residence permit cannot extend beyond the sponsor's own expiry date. If your permit has eight months left, your wife's renewal will be issued for eight months, not two years — and you will be doing it all again shortly. The clean move is to renew your own first, then theirs against the new dates.

Eligibility is re-tested. A renewal is not a rubber stamp on the original approval. If your salary dropped, your job title on the labour card changed to a profession that no longer qualifies, or your accommodation proof is stale, the renewal can be refused where the original was approved. Salary thresholds and the profession rule are laid out in our GCC family sponsorship salary requirements guide, and if you are already below the line, the workarounds that actually work.

Children have their own clocks. Sons age out of dependent sponsorship at a defined age and must switch to their own visa or leave; daughters generally remain sponsorable while unmarried. Dependents aged 18 and over also now take the medical. Our guide to the over-18 dependent medical covers that specific step.

If a dependent's visa has already expired while you were dealing with your own, the fine mechanics differ from a tourist overstay — the late dependent renewal fine guide explains how to calculate and clear it through ICP before it blocks the whole family file.

What happens if you miss the expiry date?

First, the good news, because the internet is full of outdated advice here. The UAE's current official position, published on the government portal, is that residents are granted flexible grace periods reaching up to six months depending on resident category to remain in the country after the residence permit is cancelled or expires.

That is a meaningful change from the flat "30 days" that most guides still repeat, and it is category-dependent — do not assume you personally get six months. Golden and Green visa holders, investors and some skilled categories sit at the generous end; a standard employment visa sits lower. Our UAE grace period guide breaks the tiers down and explains exactly when the clock starts.

Once the grace period is gone, the fine is AED 50 per day, confirmed both on the government portal and on ICP's own residency service page. Alongside it, the Emirates ID accrues its own AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000. The residence fine is the dangerous one because there is no published cap on it.

The practical consequences of running past the grace period stack up fast: you cannot exit without settling, you cannot start a new visa while fines are open, your dependents are exposed simultaneously, and a long overstay creates a record that complicates future applications. If fines have already accrued and you think there were legitimate reasons, fine reduction is sometimes possible — but it is discretionary, not a right.

Why renewals get blocked, and how to clear each one

A renewal rarely gets "rejected" in the dramatic sense. It gets stuck. These are the recurring causes, roughly in order of how often we see them:

  • Lapsed or unsynced health insurance. The most common single blocker. Fix the policy, wait for sync, resubmit once.
  • Sponsor's establishment card or trade licence expired. On a company file this freezes every employee's transaction at once. See unfreezing staff visas after an establishment card expiry and what an expired trade licence does to your visas.
  • Unpaid fines on the file. Immigration fines, and in some cases traffic fines, can hold a transaction.
  • Unpaid ILOE subscription. Small amount, disproportionate consequence.
  • Passport with under six months' validity. Renew the passport first; a short passport either blocks the file or produces a short permit.
  • Name mismatch between passport and Emirates ID. Common after a passport renewal changes how the name is printed. Our guide to fixing an Emirates ID and passport name mismatch covers the correction.
  • Medical result not yet in the system, or an unfit result requiring follow-up.
  • Free zone quota exhausted on the sponsor's establishment — see what to do when a free zone visa quota is full.
  • An absconding report or labour ban sitting on the record from a previous employer.

The diagnostic habit that saves the most time: check the status before you resubmit. Resubmitting a blocked transaction usually just spends the fee again. Find out what is actually holding it, clear that, then file once.

Edge cases: renewing from abroad, changing jobs, and long absences

Renewing while outside the UAE. The medical fitness test and, where required, biometrics have to be done inside the country. A residence renewal is therefore not something you can complete remotely from abroad in the general case. If you are outside and your permit is approaching expiry, the usual answer is to return before expiry and renew here.

The six-month absence rule. A UAE residence permit can lapse if the holder remains outside the country for a continuous period — historically six months — with exceptions for certain categories and for holders who obtain prior permission. Golden and Green visa holders are treated more flexibly on this point. If you have been away a long time and are unsure whether your permit is still live, check the status before you book a flight.

Changing jobs mid-renewal. If you are moving employers, you are not renewing — you are cancelling one permit and issuing another under the new sponsor. That is a different transaction with different costs and its own timing risks. Our job change without NOC guide covers the sequence and the ban triggers.

Renewing after the grace period has already started. Possible in many cases, but treat it as urgent rather than routine, and expect fines to be settled before anything else completes.

Newborns. A child born in the UAE has a defined window to be registered and put on a residence visa. See our newborn visa deadline guide.

Domestic workers. A maid or driver sponsored personally renews on a separate track with its own fee structure and Tadbeer involvement, and must be handled alongside — not after — the sponsor's own renewal.

Six mistakes that turn a routine renewal into a problem

  • Starting a week before expiry. The immigration step is two days; everything around it is not. Thirty days is the sane runway.
  • Assuming the employer is handling it. Plenty of renewals lapse because both sides assumed the other had filed. Ask for confirmation, and check the status yourself.
  • Letting the passport run short. Under six months' validity and you are either blocked or issued a truncated permit you will have to redo.
  • Renewing dependents before yourself. Their permit cannot outlast yours, so you end up paying twice for a short issue.
  • Resubmitting a stuck file repeatedly. Diagnose first. Each resubmission is another fee.
  • Trusting the old "30-day grace period" rule. The current official position is up to six months by category — but "up to" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Confirm your own category rather than assuming.

Get your UAE renewal handled before the clock runs down

A UAE residence renewal is not difficult. It is just a chain of four dependencies — insurance, medical, permit, Emirates ID — across two possible authorities, with an expiry date attached and an AED 50 per day penalty for getting the timing wrong. Most of the pain people experience is scheduling pain, not immigration pain.

Wathim runs UAE residence visa renewals end to end: we work out whether your file sits with ICP or GDRFA, check for blockers before we file rather than after, book the medical, confirm the insurance is compliant and live, file the renewal, and track the Emirates ID to delivery — for employees, families and company files alike. See the UAE residency visa service, browse the residency visa hub for the other Gulf countries, or look at everything we handle on the UAE services page.

Tell us your expiry date and emirate and we will come back with the exact steps, the real cost, and the date you need to start. Related reading: Emirates ID renewal, the medical fitness test, grace periods after cancellation, and checking your visa status by passport number.

Frequently Asked Questions

ICP publishes AED 100 per year of residency, AED 100 application fee and AED 100 smart service fee for the permit, plus AED 100 per year of validity and AED 100 smart service for the Emirates ID. Add the medical fitness test, an annual health insurance premium and any typing-centre or free-zone service charge, and most individual renewals land somewhere around AED 1,100 to AED 3,500 all-in.

ICP states two days for the residency transaction itself once the file is complete and paid. The realistic end-to-end timeline is one to three weeks, because the insurance has to be active and synced, the medical fitness test takes one to four days depending on the service tier, and the new Emirates ID is printed and couriered afterwards rather than issued on the spot.

Start about 30 days before expiry. The Emirates ID can officially be renewed from six months before expiry, so the card is never the constraint. ICP's own guidance is that renewing the residence visa unusually early — roughly one to six months ahead, typically for travel reasons — requires special approval from ICP first, so very early renewals are not simply filed.

It follows the emirate that issued your file, not where you live now. Dubai-issued files go through GDRFA Dubai, its app or an Amer centre. Files from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain go through ICP Smart Services or a typing centre. Free zone residents usually file through their free zone's own portal, which routes into the right system.

Yes. The medical fitness test repeats at every renewal for anyone aged 18 and over; it is not a one-time entry requirement. Children under 18 are generally exempt. You take it at a DHA centre in Dubai, a SEHA centre in Abu Dhabi, or an EHS centre in the northern emirates, and the result flows back to immigration electronically.

The current official position is that residents get flexible grace periods reaching up to six months after expiry or cancellation, depending on resident category — not the flat 30 days older guides quote. Once the grace period ends the fine is AED 50 per day, with a separate AED 20 per day Emirates ID fine capped at AED 1,000. Open fines block exit and any new visa.

Generally no. The medical fitness test and, where required, biometric capture must be done inside the UAE, so a renewal cannot be completed remotely in the ordinary case. If your permit is close to expiry while you are abroad, plan to return before it expires. A long continuous absence can also cause the permit itself to lapse, so check your status before booking.

On an employment visa the employer bears the cost by law and cannot lawfully deduct it from your salary — that covers the immigration fees, the medical and the Emirates ID. On a family or dependent visa the sponsoring resident pays every line themselves. On a free zone file the free zone bills the employer, usually including its own service charge on top of the government fee.

The most common causes are a lapsed or not-yet-synced health insurance policy, an expired trade licence or establishment card on the sponsor's side, unpaid immigration fines, an unpaid ILOE unemployment insurance subscription, a passport with under six months' validity, or a name mismatch between passport and Emirates ID. Diagnose the specific blocker before resubmitting, because each resubmission costs another fee.

No — it gets capped by yours. A dependent's residence permit cannot extend beyond the sponsor's own expiry date, so if you have eight months left, your spouse's renewal is issued for eight months. Renew your own permit first, then file the dependents against the new dates, otherwise you pay for a short issue and repeat the whole exercise shortly afterwards.

Sponsored residence visas are issued for one, two or three years depending on the category, with a standard employment visa typically two years and renewable. Unsponsored categories — investors, property owners, Green and Golden residence — run to five or ten years. A dependent's visa is additionally capped by the sponsor's own expiry date regardless of the category maximum.
