Failed the Saudi SVP (Takamol) Test? Your Three Attempts, the Full Fee Each Time, and What It Does to Your Visa

You get three attempts at the Saudi Skills Verification Program test and you pay the full fee for every one of them - USD 85 since 9 September 2026, not the USD 50 most agents still quote. Here is what a fail actually costs, what it does to a work visa that has not been issued yet, and the pass mark nobody tells you.

The Short Answer

If you have failed the Saudi Skills Verification Program test - the one most people call the Takamol test - these are the numbers that matter:

  • You get three attempts in total.
  • You pay the full fee again for each one. There is no reduced retake rate.
  • The fee abroad is USD 85 from 9 September 2026. It was USD 50 before that, and a great many agents, recruiters and government pages still quote the old figure.
  • The pass mark is 50%.

So three attempts is not USD 85. It is up to USD 255, plus whatever your bank charges on the conversion.

What a fail does to your visa depends entirely on whether you are still at home waiting for the visa to be issued, or already inside the Kingdom. Those are two different situations with two different risks, and most of the confusion online comes from mixing them up.

Almost Every Fee You Will Read Is Out of Date

Booking, centres and the official fee are set out in full in our SVP booking guide. This is the single most common thing that catches people out, so it is worth being blunt about it.

The fee for taking the test outside Saudi Arabia rose to USD 85 on 9 September 2026 (PACC SVP FAQ, pacc.qiwa.sa, checked 13 October 2026). Before that date it was USD 50, and USD 50 was correct right up to 8 September 2026.

The problem is that the old number is still everywhere. Pakistan's NAVTTC pages describing the Takamol booking process quote a USD 50 assessment fee. The official SVP user-guide screenshots from November 2025 show USD 50, because they were made when that was the price. News reports up to July 2026 use it. Agents quote it because they learned it in 2024.

Separately, a widely-shared Gulf News explainer quotes SAR 470. That figure is for candidates inside Saudi Arabia and it is also now out of date - the in-Kingdom fee is SAR 702.6, paid by the employer through the SVP Local portal.

If someone has quoted you a price, check which year and which country it applies to before you budget three attempts around it.

What One, Two or Three Attempts Actually Cost

Because every attempt is charged in full, the honest way to budget is per attempt. The figures below use the official USD 85 and SAR 702.6 (PACC SVP FAQ, checked 13 October 2026) and NAVTTC's own rupee range for Pakistan, which already allows for exchange-rate movement.

AttemptsAbroad, in USDPakistan, in PKR (NAVTTC range)Inside the Kingdom, in SAR (employer pays)
18523,500-24,500702.6
217047,000-49,0001,405.2
3 (the maximum)25570,500-73,5002,107.8

India and Bangladesh have no official local figure, because the charge is in dollars on a Visa or Mastercard card. As an illustration only, at Wise's mid-market rates on 13 October 2026 (95.12 rupees and 123.2 taka to the dollar), one attempt is about INR 8,100 or Tk 10,500, and three attempts about INR 24,300 or Tk 31,400 - before your bank's own rate and any foreign-transaction charge, which no official source can tell you. Check the rate on the day you pay.

Two costs sit outside the table:

  • The employer refund covers one test. The booking screen abroad has you declare that your employer should refund the fee for one test, in the occupation on your work visa. On paper, then, attempt one is the employer's cost and attempts two and three are yours.
  • A missed appointment costs the same as a fail. A no-show gets nothing back (PACC SVP FAQ). A fee lost to a missed bus is as gone as a fee lost to a 48%.

The test is the smallest line in the employer's bill for bringing you over; how the rest compares across the Gulf is laid out on the work permit cost comparison.

The Pass Mark Is 50% - and That Is Lower Than People Assume

The pass mark is 50%, per the exam instructions shown on the SVP International portal (checked 13 October 2026).

Two things follow from that, and they pull in opposite directions.

The encouraging one: half marks is a genuinely reachable bar for a tradesman who actually does the job. Most people who fail are not failing because they cannot do the work.

The less encouraging one: no official source we found gives separate pass marks for the computer test and the practical where an occupation requires both. We do not know whether they are averaged or whether each must be passed independently. That is a real gap, and we would rather say so than guess.

The number of questions is also not published. The procedural guide published by the Ministry of Human Resources (HRSD) in May 2021 says the questions are randomised and vary between candidates, so two people sitting the same trade test will not see the same paper.

Why People Who Can Do the Job Still Fail

The test is up to 120 minutes (PACC SVP FAQ, checked 13 October 2026). Older sources say 75 minutes, or 30 + 30, or three hours for Nepal; the current FAQ figure is the maximum.

Depending on the occupation, it is either computer-based only, or computer-based plus a practical marked by an assessor. The computer portion runs on Prometric at a test centre, and there is also an online option with remote proctoring.

The failures we see described follow a pattern, and it is rarely about skill:

  • The computer part, not the practical. Experienced tradesmen are being asked to answer written multiple-choice questions about work they normally do with their hands, in a language they may read less fluently than they speak.
  • Language choice at booking. The test is offered in nine languages - Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu, Filipino, Sinhala, Tamil, Bengali and Nepali - and you choose at booking from the options offered for your trade. Choosing English out of habit when you read Urdu more comfortably has cost people an attempt.
  • Unfamiliarity with the format. Many candidates have not sat a computer-based multiple-choice exam since school, or ever.

None of that is fixed by knowing your trade better. It is fixed by practising the format before you pay USD 85 again.

For scale, the only official pass rate we found is Pakistan's. NAVTTC reports an overall 80% pass rate across all assessments from the programme's start to 30 June 2026. In Bangladesh, The Business Standard reported in September 2025 that around 30% were failing, and Prothom Alo found about 19% failing at one Dhaka centre in 2023. No Saudi body publishes a pass rate. A first fail puts you in a sizeable minority, not a hopeless one.

Before You Rebook, Check What Your Result Actually Says

Not every disappointing screen is a fail. The SVP International portal uses result statuses that are easy to misread, and some of them mean something other than "you failed":

  • Pending. The computer test is done and the practical is still to be marked. It is not a result yet.
  • Free re-test. The portal can credit a free re-test as part of "routine quality assurance procedures", and holds the result back until it is done. If you are offered one, it is not a fail and it is not charged.
  • Violated. The result has been cancelled for a breach of the test rules. That is a different and more serious outcome than a fail, and nothing in this guide about retakes should be read as applying to it.
  • Passed the practical, failed the computer test. That is a fail of the whole test: the FAQ says the two parts are complementary and the entire test must be taken again. No partial pass is carried forward.

Results usually appear at once and occasionally take up to five days (PACC SVP FAQ). NAVTTC tells Pakistani candidates that a successful result reaches the portal within 24 hours. If you passed and the certificate does not show up when the embassy processes your visa, the official FAQ says to send the certificate, visa application and passport to SVP support, then contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and try the service again.

Anyone - including a recruiter who doubts you - can check a certificate on the portal's public "Check certificate" and "Labor result" pages. If an agent tells you that you failed and offers to "fix" it, check those pages yourself first.

If You Are Still at Home and the Visa Has Not Been Issued

The visa itself, and which costs fall on the employer rather than you, are covered in the Saudi work visa cost guide. This is the higher-stakes situation.

If your visa occupation is on the activated list for your country, you must pass the test before the work visa is issued. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs checks the certificate against the occupation code on the visa - the portal says so in as many words, and the MOFA portal is where the visa side of that check lives.

So a fail does not cancel a visa - it stops one being issued. In practice that means the job offer sits waiting while you rebook, and the pressure comes from your employer and the recruitment agency rather than from any Saudi deadline. The employer's own half of the file - the visa request that names your occupation - is set out in the Saudi new-hire work permit checklist, and it is worth asking the recruiter to confirm the occupation on it before you sit again.

Two practical points. First, the booking screen abroad makes you confirm that your employer should refund the fee for one test in the occupation on your work visa - so the first attempt is, in principle, recoverable from the employer. Retakes, in practice, are not. Press reports from Bangladesh (2023 and 2025) and Nepal (2026) say workers pay in practice regardless.

Second, you pay in US dollars by Visa or Mastercard on the international portal. Mada is not accepted there. NAVTTC's rupee figure for USD 85 is roughly PKR 23,500-24,500, which moves with the exchange rate. No official rupee figure for India or taka figure for Bangladesh is published, because the charge is in dollars and your bank's rate decides the rest.

If You Are Already Inside Saudi Arabia

If you are already here, your iqama is the thing to watch: see the iqama renewal guide. Inside the Kingdom the test is tied to your work permit rather than to visa issuance. Your employer signs in to the SVP Local portal through Qiwa, registers you and pays SAR 702.6, and a pass is needed for the work permit to be issued or renewed in a covered occupation.

There is a third case people forget: if you are changing the profession on your iqama to a covered occupation, the employer's portal has a separate option for booking an appointment to change occupation. A fail there blocks the profession change rather than your current permit.

Because the employer pays and books in-Kingdom, a failed attempt is a conversation with your employer as much as an administrative step. Find out before you rebook whether your employer is buying test packages through the portal, because that affects how quickly a second appointment can be arranged. The SVP Local portal sells those packages excluding VAT, and they are non-refundable and tied to the establishment.

The reason a fail matters beyond the permit is the chain behind it. The work permit is needed to renew the iqama, and the renewal itself is processed by the employer through Muqeem or Absher Business. So in a covered occupation, no pass means no permit, and no permit means the iqama cannot be renewed in that occupation. The first link is official (the 2021 ministry guide); the second is our reading of two sources, not one official sentence, and we say so because it is the one people quote with most confidence.

After a Third Fail: What the Official Text Says, and What It Does Not

This is the question people ask most and the one answered worst online, so here is exactly what each source says, with its weight.

SourceWhat it saysHow much weight to give it
Ministerial Decision 137860 (HRSD, 2021)Passing is a basic requirement for an entry visa for skilled workers, and for issuing or renewing work permits inside the KingdomOfficial - still the legal basis
PACC SVP FAQ (checked 13 October 2026)Up to 3 attempts, and a fee for eachOfficial and current
HRSD procedural guide (May 2021)A worker who fails three times "will not be granted a work permit for the tested occupation"Official, but dated 2021
Kathmandu Post (30 July 2026)Workers who fail all three attempts become ineligible to travel to Saudi Arabia for workPress report
Life in Saudi Arabia (undated, about 2021) and some agency sites (2026)Final exit, deportation or being "sent back" after three failsNot supported by any official text we found

Read together, the official position is narrower than the rumours. Three fails closes the tested occupation: no visa for it if you are abroad, no work permit for it if you are inside. Nothing official we found says three fails bans you from Saudi Arabia altogether, from every occupation, or triggers deportation. Nothing official says either whether the slate is ever wiped clean.

Inside the Kingdom, a third fail is therefore an employer conversation about the role rather than just another booking - whether you stay in a different position, which means a profession change with its own rules, or the employment ends. The Saudi work permit service covers the Qiwa side of either route, and if you want someone to look at the file, brief the desk before the permit date rather than after it.

If someone uses the deportation story to sell you an urgent fix, ask for the official document. There is no service that turns a fail into a pass: the computer test is machine-marked, the practical is scored by an assessor at the centre, and the result is checkable on the portal by anyone.

How Long the Certificate Lasts Once You Pass

Validity changed, and this is another place where older advice is now wrong.

  • Two years for a computer-only test, or for Recognition of Prior Learning.
  • Five years if your assessment included a practical component.

(PACC SVP FAQ, checked 13 October 2026.)

Older sources - and plenty of agents - say five years for everyone. That is now wrong for computer-only tests, and it is the sort of error that surfaces two years later when a work permit renewal is refused and nobody can work out why.

Check Whether You Need the Test at All

Attestation of the certificates RPL relies on is covered in the GCC attestation guide. Before paying for a second attempt, confirm you are actually in scope. Three ways out exist:

1. Your occupation may not be mandatory for your country. The catalogue lists about 1,250 occupations tested under 135 exam trades, but activation is per country: roughly 855 are switched on for India and Pakistan, 714 for Bangladesh, 161 for Sri Lanka. The official FAQ is explicit: "If your occupation is not among the mandatory occupations, it is not required to take the professional accreditation test."

2. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). For some occupations a review of your training certificate - or, for drivers, your home driving licence - replaces the test. It costs the same USD 85 and the certificate lasts two years. RPL documents that look forged are rejected, so a certificate that has been through Saudi-recognised attestation is a safer basis than a photocopy. Drivers in covered driving occupations should check this first: the catalogue even includes 'Private Car Driver - Musaned'.

3. You may be in the wrong programme entirely. Engineers register with the Saudi Council of Engineers, not SVP - its professional exam is a different test, set out in our Saudi Council of Engineers exam guide. Health workers go to the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Professional, non-trade roles where a degree is checked fall under the separate Qualification Verification Program (QVP), at USD 280 per request. The PACC occupation search routes these elsewhere.

What to Do Before You Book Attempt Two

You have at most two attempts left and each costs the full fee. Spend an hour on these before spending USD 85:

Confirm the occupation code. Check the exact occupation on your visa or permit against the PACC catalogue. People have sat - and failed - a test for an adjacent trade. The official FAQ says an occupation chosen wrongly cannot be changed, and we found no published procedure for a candidate who booked the wrong one. If that is your situation, write to SVP support before paying for attempt two, not after.

Pick the right language. Nine are available. Choose the one you read most comfortably, not the one you speak at work.

Find out whether your trade includes a practical. It changes what you prepare and it changes how long your certificate will last.

Practise the written format under a clock. This is the part that fails tradesmen, and it is the only part you can train quickly. Multiple-choice at pace is a skill separate from the trade itself.

Check the cancellation terms. Cancelling a booking returns account credit, not cash. If you are not ready, moving the appointment is better than losing the attempt. You can reschedule once, at least 72 hours before the test; inside 72 hours, or if you do not turn up, the fee is gone (PACC SVP FAQ). The full rescheduling and cancellation rules are in the booking guide.

Practise the Format, Because the Syllabus Is Not Published

The single most useful thing you can do between attempt one and attempt two is sit the test format again, cold, in the language you will sit it in. The PACC FAQ says the questions are random and vary between candidates, and the number of questions is not published, so there is no question list to memorise even in principle.

What is consistent is the shape: multiple choice, on a computer, up to 120 minutes, heavy on safety, sequence and method - the questions a competent tradesman answers by habit and a nervous one second-guesses.

Our free SVP practice test is 39 original multiple-choice questions across four trades, untimed and scored at the end against the authority's own 50% - so 20 of 39 is a pass. Each answer carries the rule it comes from, so a wrong answer tells you which habit to fix rather than just which box to tick. It is not the real question pool; nobody outside PACC has that. The full SVP guide has the format, fees and sources behind every figure here.

A Retake Plan for Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC Technicians and Welders

Electrical, plumbing, refrigeration and AC, and welding were four of the five trades in the first overseas phase - India's 2022 pilot was plumber, electrician, welder, refrigeration/AC technician and automobile electrician (Arab News, December 2022) - and each is still a large family among the 135 exam trades on the SVP International portal. If you sit one of them, the free per-trade sets are the quickest way to find out which part of the trade the written test is catching you on:

TradeFree setWhat the questions lean on
Electrician10 electrician questionsSafe isolation, RCDs, circuit breaker selection, earth fault loop impedance, bonding, cable derating, fault finding
Plumber10 plumber questionsTraps and drainage, backflow prevention, legionella control, pressure testing, water hammer, galvanic corrosion
HVAC / AC technician10 HVAC/AC questionsRefrigerant handling and recovery, safety classes, brazing, charging, evacuation, system diagnosis, airflow
Welder9 welder questionsProtective clothing, gas cylinder and hot work safety, hydrogen cracking, weld defects, preheat, distortion
  1. Sit your trade's set cold, in the language you will sit the real test in if you can, and note which topics you got wrong rather than the score.
  2. Read the rationale for every wrong answer. Each one names the standard it comes from. A wrong answer on safe isolation and a wrong answer on cable derating need different fixes.
  3. Then practise at length, under a clock. The free sets are untimed. The real test runs up to 120 minutes, and reading stamina in a second language is part of what fails people. Our paid SVP practice bank has 200 original questions - 50 each for electrician, plumber, HVAC technician and welder - and a timed 40-question, 60-minute mock for each trade, marked at 50%. It costs AED 149 for 180 days of access.
  4. Book attempt two when your mock scores sit comfortably above 50%, not just touching it. The real paper is randomised and will not match any practice set.

Be clear about what any practice bank is, ours included: questions written to general trade knowledge and safe practice, because the official FAQ says no resources or syllabus exist. The 40-question, 60-minute length is a practice length; the real question count is not published. If your trade is outside these four - driving, construction, cleaning, food - the format advice above still applies, but we do not have a trade-specific set for you, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong one.

The Trade You Test In Is the Profession You Live With

People pick a trade on the booking screen the way they pick a dropdown. It is not a dropdown. The trade you are verified in is the trade your work visa is issued against, and it is supposed to be the profession printed on your iqama.

Get it wrong and the consequences are slow and expensive rather than immediate:

If you have failed once, this is the moment to check that the trade on your booking is the trade you intend to work in for the next five years. Changing it after you pass is harder than choosing it correctly now.

How Long the Whole Thing Takes

No official source publishes an end-to-end timeline, and anyone who gives you one as a fact is guessing. What the official pages do pin down are the individual steps, and these are the ones with a number attached:

StepWhat is publishedSource
Result after the testUsually at once, sometimes up to 5 daysPACC SVP FAQ

Everything else in your timeline - the medical, the attestation, the stamping, the flight - belongs to the employer's process rather than Takamol's, and that sequence is set out in the work visa guide.

What Comes After the Certificate

Passing the SVP clears one condition. The list that follows it is longer than most workers are told before they leave:

You can see what the recurring Saudi costs come to for your own case with the iqama cost calculator.

What We Could Not Confirm

The honest gaps, because an exam guide that pretends to certainty is worse than one that does not:

  • Whether there is a waiting period between attempts. No official source we found sets a minimum gap before rebooking.
  • Whether the computer test and the practical have separate pass marks, or whether the 50% is a combined score.
  • How many questions the test contains. Not published; the paper is randomised per candidate.
  • Whether a third failure is ever wiped clean. The 2021 ministry guide says no work permit for the tested occupation, and the Kathmandu Post reports no visa for that work; no source we found says whether a fourth attempt becomes possible after a period, or whether a different occupation remains open.
  • Whether a no-show or a free quality-assurance re-test counts as one of the three attempts. The FAQ says a no-show forfeits the fee; it does not say whether it uses an attempt.
  • Whether employers reliably refund the first fee abroad. The portal says they should. Reporting from Bangladesh and Nepal says workers pay.

If you have a written answer from PACC on the third-failure question in particular, we would like to see it - it is the one that matters most and the one nobody publishes.

Where to Go From Here

A failed SVP attempt is rarely the only paperwork in play. If you are already in the Kingdom and the test is tied to a move between employers, the certificate travels with you while it is in date - the move itself is in the iqama transfer guide. If RPL is your route out of a retake, cost the attestation of the certificate first with the attestation cost estimator.

Everything else Saudi - visas, iqama, portals and fees - is gathered on the Saudi Arabia hub, and if you would rather handle an in-Kingdom step in person, the Saudi service centres directory lists Tasheel and Jawazat offices by city.

Want this handled for you? Wathim does not book or sit the SVP for anyone and cannot change a result - nobody honest can. What the desk does handle is the paperwork around it: the work visa file, the iqama and residency chain, attestation and profession corrections. Brief the desk and we will take the filing and the follow-ups off your plate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three attempts in total, according to the PACC SVP FAQ. You pay the full fee for each one - there is no reduced retake rate - so three attempts abroad is up to USD 255.

USD 85 outside Saudi Arabia from 9 September 2026, and SAR 702.6 inside the Kingdom paid by the employer. The widely-quoted USD 50 was correct until 8 September 2026 and is now out of date, as is the SAR 470 figure in older explainers.

50%, per the exam instructions on the SVP International portal. No official source gives separate pass marks for the computer test and the practical where an occupation requires both.

Yes. The Skills Verification Program is run by Takamol for the Ministry of Human Resources, and workers and agents commonly call it the Takamol test. The booking portal is the PACC/SVP portal.

If you are abroad, it does not cancel a visa - it stops one being issued, because MOFA checks the certificate against the occupation code before issuance. If you are inside the Kingdom, the pass is needed for a work permit to be issued or renewed in a covered occupation.

Abroad, you cannot get a work visa for that occupation. Inside Saudi Arabia, the 2021 ministry guide says you will not be granted a work permit for the tested occupation. Claims that three fails mean final exit or deportation have no official source we could find, and no source says whether the occupation ever reopens.

The booking screen abroad asks you to confirm your employer should refund the fee for one test in the occupation on your visa. That is the first test. Retakes in practice are usually paid by the worker, and press reporting from Bangladesh and Nepal says workers often pay the first one too. Inside the Kingdom the employer pays and books.

Two years for a computer-only test or Recognition of Prior Learning, and five years if the assessment included a practical. Older sources saying five years for everyone are now wrong for computer-only tests.

No. Engineers register with the Saudi Council of Engineers instead, and health workers go to the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. The PACC occupation search routes those occupations elsewhere. Non-trade professional roles fall under the separate Qualification Verification Program at USD 280.

Sometimes. Recognition of Prior Learning reviews a training certificate - or a home driving licence for covered driving occupations - instead of testing you. It costs the same USD 85 and the resulting certificate lasts two years.

No official source we found publishes one. NAVTTC describes simply re-booking a new appointment on the portal after an unsuccessful attempt, and the PACC FAQ sets the limit at three attempts without mentioning a gap between them.

The trade you are verified in is the trade your visa is issued against and is supposed to match the profession on your iqama. If the trade on your booking is wrong, fix it before you sit again - correcting the iqama profession later is a separate and slower process.
